playing cricket with Astigmatism
« on: March 08, 2016, 08:39:51 AM »

I've recently been diagnosed with a Astigmatism in my right eye, I'm long sighted and been prescribed a pair of varifocals which I'm slowly getting used to. My main concern is that I'm not picking up the length of the balls in the nets. I'm due for another test for contacts in a few weeks, has anyone got this condition (I'm told its common) and playing cricket with it? Do contacts help restore your focal point?

I have acute astigmatism in my right eye, worn lenses for nearly 10 years now and its never been an issue. Had more of an issue with them drying out on especially windy days!

Same point as above. I've been using contacts for almost 4 years, they're much better than glasses. I always keep eye drops handy for the dryness.

Yes I have it, but also as Im 44 my eyesight is getting worse so now I have contacts, reading glasses & my main long sighted glasses. Currently netting wearing my glasses and its been a big improvement.  You should get " TORIC" lenses. I was wearing those for years for sport & they were fine.

I have similar eye problems. One cornea is round and the oval, plus one scans up and down, the other left to right. Means I struggle to pick up full tosses or balls that loop in the outfield. My eyesite in general is pretty good at 44, just a touch of short sightedness and I only use VDU glasses for work.

Cheers chaps thanks for the tips. It's good to know it shouldn't hinder my cricket. I hit 40 this year and its been a shock not being able to pick up the ball.

I had it in both eyes. Had laser surgery (PRK) around 5 years ago at age 40.  It gave me 6/6 vision and i now only wear glasses for reading. Not cheap at $5k but after wearing contact lenses for years, it was worth it!

I played for 4 years without realising I had one, was so bad in my right eye my brain had just stopped using it and was purely using my left to focus. I used to be great on the pull shot but completely lost the ability to pick up length early.

Now have contacts in one eye, luckily wife works at Specsavers so don't have to pay, and have suddenly started picking the short ball again.

If you can wear them, I cannot recommend contacts enough.

I've had to wear contacts since I was 17, due to an eye condition .
Early lenses for me were a nightmare but these days I can barely tell they are in, and often wear them for 15hrs or more.
I've found the eye sprays are a godsend with regards to dry eyes, and wish I'd started using them sooner.

This is what rang alarm bells for me, I'm usually good on the pull/hook, but in the nets I wasn't picking up the ball and took one on the grill.

Great topic!

I have astigmatism in my left eye.  I've been wearing contact lenses  for a long time. I have to say that I don't have a problem picking up length as much as losing the ball in the air sometimes. Let me explain. Under extremely bright conditions when there is a lot of glare, if sun is reflected off the shiny side of the ball, I lose sight of the ball. I switched to baseball sunglasses and it helped a little bit but from time to time, it happens. I wonder if it has something to do with my astigmatism.

I have the same thing and struggling to pick up any length; I've found it to be okay when facing slower bowling or straight up and down stuff. However, have one area on a decent length which I can't pick at the moment and it's really annoying me!

Glasses haven't worked (only make the blurriness bigger), so I'm struggling massively and don't wanna drop down standards - do contacts make a difference to this or?!

Sorry to hi-jack a post :D
