Pre-season team meeting
« on: March 16, 2016, 01:56:05 PM »

I was curious to know if many teams have a pre-season meeting as a squad to talk about the season ahead? If you do, what do you talk about and in what kind of format does it take place?

We had one back in January the week before indoor nets started.
Lead by the coach and skipper. But just an organised chat really.

We talked about:
Aims for the season.
What we want to get out of training.
How we are going to play our cricket.
Possible recruitment targets.
New match day routines.

Usually over a beer. Just talk about subs, meeting times , when selection takes place.  Keep everyone in the loop

We try to have 2, a 'group activity' and then a more formal meeting.

The activity has tended to be a golf day or pre season jolly somewhere so that everyone can have some down time and any new faces can get to know everyone away from a net. We then have a meeting with all the players to talk about where we are, where we want to be, personal targets, any league changes etc.

Club friendly.
Sometimes first versus seconds. Some times mixed, depends what the skippers want(some second team captains want a hard run out with there xi, or they think they can take the firsts, others bottle it and ask for a fair game, either way is fun)

Generally have a chat before, tell people what there roll is for season, how they want to approach the fame/ there spot etc.

Usually all changes a few games in though, lol

I think the club will try for one but it's pretty pointless as amateurs chop and change so regularly it's silly.. Then add in availability. Better off picking the 5/6 who you know are your core players who will play every game and make sure they are happy and content with their role.. The otjers who just turn up as and when they can be arsed just fit in

I used to play hockey to a decent level, dropped down a little recently to play with friends but we always have a meeting before the season even now.

My cricket team are fairly talented but do not practice, they have ambitions to get promoted and do well in that league. I suggested we have a meeting to talk about what is required and I was met with resistance. I thought asking the forum members about their teams would help me understand what a cricket team does as my only experience was hockey.

Thanks for all the replies, they back up what I thought. I think an informal meeting is best for us just to chat about how we are going to achieve what we want.

We are a terrible fielding team, we don't practice, we don't warm up before the game or throw the ball into the keeper (me) during the game and we do not look after the ball. We did go up a few years ago and lost every game. I only want to go up if we can survive and I don't think it is a revolutionary idea that good fielding can win you a lot of games.

Cricket's a funny beast. I find a lot of players, even the decent ones, aren't in it to actually achieve anything. It's more about the social aspect for them, so they don't want to put anything more into it apart from the game and at the pub afterwards. It helps when there's an actual social team in the club that gets fixtures, and hopefully LMS will take care of a few flakey players as well.

I think it true a lot of players just want to turn up and see what happens. I completely understand that. I just hate those players who don't practice then moan when their team loses because of dropped catches etc.
