First up thanks to @Buzz and @edge for the tips about triggering. I gave this a go today and it was a lot easier to stop the trigger movement than I thought it would be.

As suggested by Buzz and in the video he posted, I stopped my across/back and across movement and took guard on middle stump.
Instead of triggering, as suggested by edge I simply shifted the weight onto the balls of my feet. I may or may not have developed an odd bounce as the bowler is running in, but I am now still at the point the bowler delivers the ball.

As a result I was able to play the ball under my eyes easier as I wasn't on the move as the ball came out the bowlers hand.

I'll try to get some video footage of my batting next time I net so you can all cast your critical eyes over it. All feedback (other than "give up, you're sh*t") welcome  :)

Nah...we wouldn't be that nasty to you...the TROLLS might be we wouldn't!!

So I'm taking a smaller step across now after a big back and across movement last winter practice and the disaster that was 2015..

So you're back foot is stock still right?

Yes, instead of taking Leg and stepping across I'm now taking middle.
Without the half step I'm now keeping my feet still, and more importantly - in line!
As in the video Buzz posted, I'm now in a better position to strike the ball, and I'm no longer playing around my front leg if anything is on my pads.

Ironically, playing off my pads is something that's always been something of a strength, so the fact my trigger was limiting some shots off my legs has amused me slightly. Now my trigger is gone balls on my legs are guaranteed runs, anything on the stumps or outside off may be a struggle for me though... :-[

I actually know exactly what you're saying, and i thought that same thing. but it does make sense, if your front leg is more out of the way the more range you have to swing your bat. Think ABDV mentioned something similar in his masterclass videos.

If this has helped you great....perhaps we should of had some mini batting observation at Dummer or Eversley nets to see.

I just can't see see how this does anything else other than screw up offside shots.i play around the front pad too, it a weakness and has been for years. To get the bat coming thru straight I've opened the left shoulder and moved the back foot across(a lot, now a bit less) this means you back foot is more in line playing offside shots.
If your back foot is still and you move your front foot only to the ball (a drive) you are not In the right position to play offside-if the ball comes back in your across the ball from the start.

If it works for you great, we are all different, I'm just trying to get my head round it because I've always had this across the front pad problem.
If the back foot goes across that helps the left shoulder open so you are not falling over into the shot
Make sense?
Ps I am not a troll. Haha

Not sure if you're being serious, but i found this very similar to how i end up playing my best on side shot https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=whrZOG5R1zc&ab_channel=CricketYard
