Hey everyone,
Last season on a couple of occasions I foe that I needed to take the risk of running a single when the keeper was standing back. The first was in the first innings when we were setting the target and in the last over both batsmen were fairly new to the crease so singles were just as important as boundaries. On the second to last ball I was at the non strikers end and the striking batsmen missed the ball, I saw the keeper was a fair way back and I called him through for a single and made it safe.

Another situation was we were chasing and myself and the other batsmen were pretty set and he got out. There were only a few balls left and with one of the bowlers on strike without facing a ball (in months may I add due to him being injured). He played and missed I went for the single however this time I wasn't so lucky and was just out of my ground on this occasion.

I was curious how many of you would consider taking the risk of running a single to the keeper and have you got any interesting stories of seeing it happen.

Midweek game two of our lads took a 3 to the keeper.
It involved a wild over throw, but still. It was a 3!




As for other times, depends on situation, who's on strike and how I'm hitting it.

Taken loads of singles to the keeper, usually last over if we need a big over to win but Ive already told the other batsmen I'm coming.

If you want to steal a single I used to bat with the greatest thief of all time & he knew when I batted with him he could do it.  When he hit the ball to a fielder he wouldnt return to his crease & casually walk out of his crease, maybe tapping down on the pitch. If the fielder ever threw the ball long & high to mid on or mid off we would be off for a single.  Used to make me laugh so much doing it.  Fielding side would go mad but its so funny I would do it loads of times.

I'd imagine that's against the laws, I'll ask our resident law expert though. Pretending to pat the ground implies dead ball, after all yiu don't have to throw it in to the keeper of the players aren't obviously looking for a run etc

I prefer running to the other set of stumps rather than to the keeper
Generally gets me more runs too!

Legal or not this strikes me as being very poor sportsmanship. Not surprised the fielding side were cheesed off.

When chasing quick runs we always take a single as soon as the keeper has to go to ground, eg dive down leg side

I've no issue with this, although in every experience it has been an 'at the death' thing to do. Never seen it before the last couple of overs and generally when a team is chasing.

this is not common practice far as I know in my league, I suspect as has been pointed out it would be a guaranteed flashpoint for the fielding side or the bowlers would start just running out batsmen 'backing up' which has been covered to death on the forum so let's no go there 

having not really considered it myself this is my question: is the ball live as soon as it leaves the bowlers hand? so you can start legging it then?

the reason I ask is because im sure everyone knows current stumping rules prevent the keeper taking the ball until AFTER it's passed the stumps at the strikers end.

Def seems double standards to me, if batters are taking a run to the keeper.....

Oh mankad.. That's a good response to these types of players (especially the one saying they run the ball is basically dead!)

Just start mankading every ball  such things back to the batsmen to annoy them
