Had a slightly bizarre day. Turned up at the away ground to find, at last, something like a good track. However just before the start, the heavens opened and turned it into a mud heap. I volunteered to drop myself down to number 7, as I was sure there was no way I'd be able to bat on it. As it turned out, the top order collapsed and I found myself trying to mark my guard in the mud at 36-5, after another long rain delay. However I coped better than I expected, and had a 7th wicket stand of 80 with our number 8 who made a brilliant 50, while I ran as if my life depended on it without ever finding much fluency, run out off the last ball for 28. It was nice to hear the chirpy oppo turn in on themselves, and to make a contribution in an unfamiliar position. So 131 in 26 overs seemed like a competitive target, even more so when they were 10-5... At which point they proceeded to dead-bat the last 20 overs for another 12 runs, their number 5 ending 1 not out, would you believe it. Ok so I was an advocate of declaration matches the other day, but this was a great advert for overs cricket. It was weird because after the rain break the oppo were desperate to play even though conditions were nigh on unplayable, not sure why they bothered.
