There are plenty of people around with far more so it's not anything special

Yep, somebody in a @horseman 's league was on 700+ off 8 innings !!

Brilliant friendly against Steppingley of Bedford today. Neither of our Sunday sides had a game so we took a mixed side to their ground, they were a top bunch of lads, and we managed to edge a tight game. We only ended up with 10 men as there was a mix up with another player who said they could play when they couldn't!

They batted first and me and my fellow opening bowler took 6 wickets between us to reduce them to 30 something for 6. I personally took 4-12 off 6, First two were edged behind and both lads walked despite not being given out, got a lot of respect for that! They were about 50-8 before one of their lads scored 82* to take them up to 148. I had to come off after 20 overs as i managed to twist my ankle in a rabbit hole, leaving us with 9!

We chased it down in 30 odd overs. All in all a great game of cricket against a top bunch of lads.

Won today as we beat Cookham Dean over 45s, we got 247-7 in 35, @pistol101 scored 42 in 16 balls (we'll gloss over the catching practice he have cowcorner who dropped him 3 times) and scraped up 45* including a six straight down the ground and a cheeky reverse sweep for 4. They got off to a flyer but Pistol bowled some dirty spin and took 3 wickets to stall them and they ended 40 short. Helped in the battle of the vets teams that we sneaked in a few youngsters to give us the edge.

Special thanks to @Lumsden for driving down from Yorkshire to play. Great to meet you and I hope you enjoyed it.

Yes thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon. In fact it was a very good game and could have been much closer had it not been for a sensational run out, direct hit from the boundary edge (not me I hasten to add).

We won a bit of a bad-tempered game on Saturday against @Mattsky 's clubs  3XI.  It was all a bit uneccessary really and a part of the game which I really hate with people gobbing-off at each other.

Most of their team were actually a really nice bunch of lads, and a couple of our youngsters were definitely at fault for responding to the provocation, however it was a really bizarre day in many ways.

We turned up in the rain and the strip was nicely covered, the rain stopped and we all went to have a look. A chap whom we thought was the Captain seemed to take charge and decide we could mop it all up and that we all wanted to play and get a game on etc. So far so good, it turns out that he was the club chairman and the captain was in car park having a fag and not showing much interest. The chairman started mopping up the square, first with his hanky, then moved on to an old towel. He wouldn't let us near it in case we damaged his square. At this stage a couple of his teammates began to help but the rest stayed over by the pavilion smoking and showing no interest in getting involved.

Eventually we started and after a couple of overs a shower came down, we were prepared to play through, but the 'Chairmanator' came rushing out crying 'Health & safety' & 'I have a responsibility to the club' - there were a few howls of protest from our skipper, at which point their skipper started bellowing from a little shed on the boundary and getting a little aeriated about it all, but not actually emerging to discuss in any way. This all calmed down, and skipper comes in to bat and starts running up the middle of the pitch when taking singles. another couple of wickets fall and at each one (a run out and an LBW) he wails "he's given him out - I can't believe it!!!" - to evil glares from his own umpire. He then edges one and is dropped and gives our young keeper some verbals (which he deserved) them proceeds to stay in for 60 odd balls, largely shotless giving our keeper and slips chirp at random internals including chatty signals with his gloves. If any of them responded back he would explode, start swearing and wail about the 'spirit of the game'. He then fell over when running and was run out and after some debate he was called back (I wouldn't have). Exchanged a few verbals with his own umpires and things carried on in a similar vein when he was bowling, giving a bit of chat to our youngsters and not being able to cope with any back. The Chairmanator hit the cover off one to 1st slip and didn't walk and wasn;t given, he seemed to find something very interesting in the middle distance in the shocked silence after that decision.

Don't get me wrong, we won and were the better side, their skip did get a bit of chat after his bizarre behaviour, and I don't condone our youngsters getting involved - but it was his vesuvian explosions if anyone chatted back to him that were utterly bizarre - even his own players were telling him to shut up by the end.

After the game he wandered off without speaking to anyone and we left pretty briskly. I was last out of our dressing room and overheard a loud and lively post-mortem in their dressing room where most of his side seemed to be having a right go at him and telling him he needed to call down and shut up during the game. Many seemed to be telling him not to pick fights and not to have a go at his own umpires. I know there will be two sides to every story but for that guy to be a Captain and to wail on about the spirit of the game was mystifying.

They got 97 off 39 overs and we chased it down off about 22 I think - I bowled at the death which was novel but thrilling (apart from the Chairman :()

It was a very odd day at a very nice ground.  3XI warriors eh? :)

He was run out after falling over but you called him back? Whaaaaaaaaaat?

Turned up for the 2nd time in 3 weeks to find our pitch had been used. Lost the toss and fielded which we would have done anyway. One of their openers was a slogger, everything going legside. Got rid of him soon enough but the other opener (bloody old) just went for singles and got 96* so fair play. Did alright in the field; took a catch at point and chased down fine.

They got 217 off 40 and we fell 20 short. Top order just collapses every time and we rely too much on our opener to put a score up. Didn't bat either and haven't had a knock since early May, wahwahwah.

Season going well now, we're back up to 2nd in the table still in the hunt for promotion! I managed to get my 2nd league ton of the season this weekend, 129 before I skied one and got caught mid on for the 7th time this season 😂
League stats at the midway stage of the season- 443 runs @63 & 18 wickets at 16

@FattusCattus

Thanks for posting this.
I can only apologize for the sour taste left in the mouth because of one chap.
I was actually at our home ground as the skipper of the Twos game that we had to abandon before it started.
I now realize I actually walked past you outside of the changing rooms and was trying to place your face when I was rudely interrupted before I could! (Shortish chap with beard (at the moment) & black cap.)
If I had been sure, I would have come over to chew the fat with you. Dammit.

As far as your game goes, diffidence, a hot temper and sulkiness are not the best of bedfellows, especially in a skipper. I'll be having a word with our enthusiastic Chairmanator about it all (including the Chairman's smash to slip!) The Chair is essentially a decent bloke, but his manner can be brusque.

It's heartening that the rest of our Third XI didn't condone their skipper's behaviour and were embarrassed and fed up with it as your chaps were. And I take my hat off to your skipper for calling him back when he slipped over. If that's not an example of playing in the right spirit of the game under trying circumstances, then I don't know what is.

Once again, please pass on my apologies to your teammates, Fattus. As I say, the issue will be noted, and I'll be pursuing the issue with our Chairmanator, as this cannot happen again.
Let me know when you're  due over our way again - I'll buy you a refreshing ale or two.

Bad tempered game Saturday for us. Oppos were sledging and agitated all day for some reason. Appealing as soon as it hits the pads regardless amd even when batsmen clearly hit it etc. Got them one very bad decision apwhcih to them means it's justified. Whe they bat, they use a big lad to slog and he nicked one and didn't walk, luckily eh was clean bowled two balls later but still. We won fairly easily in the end but all our players came off saying it wasn't enjoyable. We have them last game of the season and it's already been muted about sacking the game off and just playing a friendly somewhere.

Bad times really, sure we won but when the team isn't enjoying the mannor of the games due to the amount of sledging. And agro that's about this year which is not a good sign. Their capt spoke to ours post game before the meeting with the umpires so knew his team had been out of order but his defence was 'it's the game'. Not good.

Shame really as a couple of their lads have always seemed unfairly tagged but if you choose to play with idiots then what do you expect. Understand being competitive but sledging and not waking, appealing purely to apply pressure on an umpire isn't really being competitive, just being idiots. It doesn't apply pressure to a batsmen appealing, it's purely to pressure an umpire which in amateur cricket isn't acceptable.

@Mattsky  - ah that's a shame, would've been nice to meet and have a chat.

I wouldn't worry too much about it mate, as I said, some of our boys got involved when they should've backed off, so I'm sure we didn't help. Most of your guys were really nice, which just made it all the more weird - really nice ground too.

There's nothing really for us to complain about, just a few stroppy verbals - I think my skipper was more bemused than anything else, your chap seemed to be struggling with the pressures of being a 3's captain!

Understood. I'll talk to the Chair, anyhow.
He's a new skipper, so you're probably right. But he's old enough to know better.
Anyway, a beer next time fo' sho' Mister Fattus.

Interesting weekend of league and cup games for my club. Saturday we went away to a side struggling near the bottom (we went up to 3rd because of being the only game rained off last week) but we had an incredibly weak side. Opening bowler and opening bat both away for the next couple of weeks. Won the toss and chose to bowl to looks of disgust from the rest of the team on what was meant to be a road under their covers. We bowled them out for 109 so I felt pretty vindicated. I took our opening bowler off after 9 of his 10 overs when hed taken 4 wickets which didn't go down well but they were just deadbatting him and I wanted a break through. Personally I bowled 8.1 overs and took 4-10 which was great. I felt I bowled really well and attackingly to their left handers.
We knocked it off 3 down in 25 overs, new lad went in at 5 with the scores tied and smashed his first ball through cover for 4.... no one had seen him play before so pretty happy with that. Not needed to bat.

At one point this week we had 7 players for a cup quarter final, but by sunday morning I had managed to miss count and we had 12 available... this soon dropped to 10 before the game (bloody hangovers!) but one of the players dads stepped in. Won the toss again and decided to bat, 100 run opening partnership was great but we lost quick wickets and really faltered late on to finish 171-9. Personal contribution was a 5th ball duck (LBW above the knee roll - not angry!).
They started brightly but a flurry of quick wickets and they were 98-6 after 25, my own contribution was 2-33 off 10. Not too bad but didn't bowl anywhere near as well as the Saturday.
Unfortunately a good partnership took them to 155-6 but then another few quick wickets meant they needed 6 off the last over.
1 off the first ball was followed by 2 dots and then a full toss smeared through cow for 4. Same shot next ball meant we had lost with 1 ball remaining. Very gutting but a good effort especially as a lot of our overs were bowled by a second teamer and a part timer. Had to have a word with our players about bitching and moaning at each other, hopefully it got through!

Next week we have even more players unavailable for the visit of the team 1 place above us in the league but there isn't a second team game so hopefully a few of them will step up for us!

We have introduced a rule where is someone pulls out for an unacceptable reason (such as a hangover) after selection, they have to pay any replacement's match fee.

We've also introduced a £2 late fee, where by anyone arriving after the designated meet time has to pay the fine. Unfortunately some people have decided paying the £2 is worth it so that they don't have to do any of the jobs (white line marking, put chairs out) so I'm campaigning for the fine to be doubled for each successive late arrival.
