My Batting Videos
« on: April 06, 2016, 11:16:29 AM »

Hi all, here are a couple of videos of me batting on the machine tonight. Admittedly not the most testing length in the world but I've only batted twice this winter. I seem to really struggle to hit straight, strong through cover but can't hit through mid on. Any ideas on why this might be the case?

Any other general observations welcome! Buzz, I know, I'm a walker after my shot, working bloody hard at it though!

Freeze video one at 0.43 and you'll see a couple of issues

I think you have a small issue wih the cameraman being transfixed by the machine operators prosterior if I'm honest

Batting wise I'm not a fully qualified coach yet so I'm saying nothing

Taken a quick look and indeed as mentioned before look at around 43 seconds of the first video. This will show your top half and bottom half not really working together with your shoulders opening and working everything to leg.

You also seem a little rushed and relying on your hands getting through the balls very quickly, my advise as a qualified and experienced coach would be to try adding a little trigger movement with your feet followed by a further front foot movement to get to a better position.

As it's on my clipboard already, take a look here for legside shots: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=whrZOG5R1zc

Out of interest do you know what speed the machine was set? Looks fairly sharp.

Does anyone know if it is true that most bowling machines are 10mph faster than they say?

Its more to do with not having any preparation- the ball just spits out. No action or run up to pick up clues from.

Yeah I suppose so, certainly easier to pick up length from a bowler than a machine. When I film my nets I usually put the camera close to me for better detail as I use a Go Pro so I don't often capture the pace of the ball. Just curious what it was set to.

Your front foot doesn't actually move, so you're forced to use your bottom hand which creates this 'out to in' shape, with the face of the bat going to mid on..

This being my favourite of examples

You are arching your bat from gully and I didn't see one straight bat shot. Check your grip. Where is the splice positioned with respect your thumb-fore finger V? Also, you are holding the bat away from your body - it is really your trigger movement ie cocking of your wrists which is pushing the bat away from your body and throwing off your arc completely.  Pull it in - wrist of your top hand should be closer to your abdomen and push your hands back, raising  the toe of the bat higher and forming a cradle. Practice driving with your right hand only in front of a mirror.

What do you think?
Fyi the second half of the video is bust...

I also think having your pads lower would help... ;)
