Bowling Tips
« on: April 08, 2016, 04:49:56 PM »

Hello!

I went to my first net session yesterday with a couple of my mates and it turns out i'm actually a half decent bowler! even managed to get my mate who opens for a Cambs&Hunts Prem side to edge one behind! But my problem is i'm not particularly accurate, i don't bowl massive wides or anything, and i can bowl it at a fair pace, it's just that if i want to bowl a particular spot i'll miss it by a yard or two.

I have use of some decent outdoor nets pretty much every day so i'll be taking advantage of them over the coming weeks, can you think of any drills i could do to improve accuracy? And also, what would you recommend to warm up/down? I bowled the equivalent of about 12 overs and i woke up aching all over!

Try a bowling at a cone on a length, and no matter how much i warm up my first net sessiom i always ache! Just keep doing it and those muscles womt hurt so much, just regular stetches should help though

For accuracy, try and make sure your action is repeatable - when you jump and gather your action are your arms tight to your body and going through the same place each ball, or are they wider out and less predictable? Don't change too much if it's not comfortable for you, but the more you can make your action stay the same every time, obviously the more accurate you're going to get. Think Glenn McGrath and how tidy his action is (see picture) - it's very repeatable. The more you practice the better you'll get too, not a surprise you're not immediately super accurate. You can mark out a spot on a length if you want and bowl at that until you're happy you can hit it on command. Best done without a batsman there so you don't get competitive and forget about aiming for your length!

As for the aching, not surprised you're hurting if you haven't bowled much before! Warming up is best done by starting off a few paces and strolling through your action, then building up the runup as you get looser. Plus stretches and a bit of running about to get loose before you bowl of course.
