Rob Key retires
« on: April 18, 2016, 03:47:30 PM »

one of my favourite players

without any doubt should of played more for England. Not backwards in coming forwards and told a few people where to go probably didn't help.

Liked a fag and a pint and for that reason, he was just like us(expect more talented obviously  :))

A bit sad really, terrific player......

He does some good stuff on sky so wouldn't be surprised if he ends up in the media maybe with sky or bt.

he's done more and more of that recently you youre prob right

he did say he didn't want to stand in the way of youngsters at 36....he can still hold his place in the Kent side. But you got to give him credit for not hanging around to collect a salary-potentially blocking a younger guy.

he's more a throw back player, and was not afraid to express an opinion, may of cost him some caps.

Really good bloke who should have played more at international level.

A down to earth normal lad who wouldn't look out of place in a Sunday village side!

Oh no!! One of favourite cricketers!!!

Still, the red-faced loon is a natural on the telly, and will go on to do good things there!

Yup, enjoy him on Sky, though to be honest, given how much punditry he does these days I hadn't realised he wasn't already retired from playing.

Interesting wording in his statement about coming to a mutual agreement with Kent. Does that mean he was still contracted?

Unlucky not to have played more tests, but then would you have squeezed him into the Ashes 05 team?

I grew up watching him play at Kent spending a lot of my summers watching him bat and always thought he was a class act and as he does have a test double hundred as well.
Sad day for a kent fan but they have some class younger players coming through so fair play to him. Plus I do like his commentary on sky

Rob Key was a fantastic player and should of defiantly played more for England. As a Kent fan myself I was able to see Rob play a fair bit and was always a joy to watch, I remember watching him score a fine hundred against the Netherlands in a 40 over game at Tunbridge Wells a few seasons back which was a fantastic innings. By watching a lot of Kent games over the year I had the opportunity to chat with Rob a few times and he's a really nice guy and will always find time to talk to the fans. My number one highlight of Rob Key as a player is defiantly a few years ago when he was a guest of a training session I took part in and complemented me on standing up to several fast bowlers that were all more than a foot taller than me and at least 3 years older than me as I was 14 at the time.

I think Rob will be very successful in working in the media and he is very well thought of at Sky Sports. I wish him the best of luck in all future ambitions.

Always seemed to score a lot of runs versus Surrey. Which is endearing.

I remember last season another old timer scoring some decent runs against Surrey, Darren Stevens still managed to whack a fair few in the T20 at the Oval when people were saying he should retire, he proved them wrong, 90 from 39 balls I believe. I've always seen Kent v Surrey as a bit of a Derby as far as cricket goes as technically our derby would be Essex but its so much easier to get to the Oval than Chelmsford. I always enjoy watching Surrey v Kent at the Oval, I remember the RL One Day cup game a couple of years ago when the scores were tied on the last ball and Gareth Batty was run out resulting in the game being tied, what a game that was.
