An Interesting Find - Puma Atomic 5000
« on: May 03, 2016, 04:03:44 AM »

Hi All,
Picked this up cheap online and wasnt overly excited by it until it arrived. I thought it was worth sharing. I couldn't find out much online but thought somebody on here might have something to share on this particular model?

I think Gilly used the Atomic in orange early on but that may be wishful thinking. Further on from that thought I considered that this may have been a one-off sort of colour scheme from Puma as I remember him doing that with a blue kit in a boxing day test at one stage.

The stick itself is a beauty. Weighs bang on 2 pound 10 ounces and really just feels powerful in the hands. It's got an oval handle and I'd almost call it an exaggerated oval as it's much more pronounced than anything you'd get off the shelves these days.

Surprisingly only 5 or 6 wide grains on the face but that doesn't affect the performance at all. I've only bounced a ball and hit it with a mallet but the responsiveness is awesome.

Smallish edges and a high spine with no convaving.

Let me know what you think.

I had one of these. I think it was only a colourway in Australia. As i imported one from GCCC. The handle was really prominent with mine too being a big oval. Reasonably small edges with a nice high spine and full profile. It went like stink

I did not need to see those toes while eating my breakfast  ;)

Circa 2005/06 I think these bats were from. I remember being steered away from Puma by the guy who owned the cricket shop (even though he sold the bloody things) because they didn't come factory prepared or scuff sheet.

The spine is alot higher than it looks in the photo. I might try to get a measurement up.
Cost me $40AUD.
