Question for forumites. Will a bat lose its ping eventually? If so why and how long does a bat remain I  optimum condition?

Unfortunately I never use a bat long enough to get to that point, trying to rotate through the collection... As such have no idea, but I would imagine they would deteriorate at some point.

I have a Salix that is nearly 4 years old and it is still going as well as ever. Just the usual surface cracks and damage that gives character to the bit of wood

Nope, barring total destruction I suppose. Oldest bat (2005) I have is my favourite ever - the splice is heavily cracked, the toe went years ago, and the face is delaminated to hell. It still pings bouncing a ball on it as well as any other bat I own. Brought it briefly out of retirement for a t20 game when I was short of good bats a couple years ago and was hitting sixes no problem at all, only stopped using it when bits actually started breaking off the face. Wish I'd taken care of it better earlier in it's life!

Our Aussie pro last year brought over a net bat that he liked but it was completely dead, there was just no life in the middle at all. Don't think there was anything particularly wrong with it, it just did not ping well.

I think giving a bat a good refurb and sanding can often reawaken it. I've had 2 or 3 bats in for refurbs which have surprised the teammates when they received them back! I recall Laver mentioning that sometime ago too - I have personally never used a bat for long enough to feel the performance deteriorate, but I would imagine that it may happen eventually!

I suppose not unless it breaks apart. Got an early 2000s CA bat handed down from my uncle who is an ex-First Class player, the bat has an exceptional ping.

This is good news for those of us that like older bats,perhaps not the general forum trend thou !
I have heard it said many times grade 1 willow does get better as it gets older and is heavily used. I don't know if this is true or not. I would think a bat well looked after that does not dry out it's certainly possible......

Bats do lose there ping but  if it's due to useage no one can say when repressing the blade can to some degree bring the ping back

Don't bats apparently reach their leak performance just before they start to delaminate?
Not that many on here use one for long enough to know, but I'm sure I've seen that somewhere

There is of course a very well known example everyone on the forum will know:

Sachins bat towards the end of his career, he hit a purple patch coming back from his elbow problems and used something most of us would throw away. Tape everywhere delamination all over the face.
He is the only player I've seen in recent memory using a bat so well used.

I could be wrong but think some fielding side complained bits of the bat could become embedded in the ball
Or is that just urban myth?

I remember one of the commentators mentioning he scored 37% of his centuries with that bat. That could be about 37 centuries in total or lesser depending he meant test 100s, still a lot of runs.

that's been my experience, its seems to be like a two edge sword, " awesome this bat is really going, time to get the next one ready"
