Charlotte Edwards Retires
« on: May 11, 2016, 08:08:01 AM »

So Lottie has finally retired from International Cricket.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/36263023

It was coming for quite a while now, especially when a lot of the commentators were questioning her fitness during the T20 World Cup.

Such a great servant for Women's Cricket in England and I hope she gets the recognition she deserves.

Played a huge part in moving the women's game forward in this country. Hope she enjoys a well deserved retirement.

They were questioning her fitness but she was still outscoring the rest

big hole to fill as those runs will be hard to come by even if the person that comes in saves 10-20 in the field more its still a hill to climb

Fantastic player that could well have given mens county a go when younger as played against them till 16

she has done a huge amount to bring women cricket to the forefront. Not sure how much the fitness issue of the team at the last WC is justified but from where the womens game was and where it is now she has been at the forefront

I suspect the ECB will have her in a very important position very soon....

The fitness issues stem from her knees being shot, they showed lots of footage of her only running singles when two's were very much on. I agree the amount of runs she has scored will leave a massive hole in the side but if someone has got the desire, drive and the willingness to step up and at least attempt to fill her shoes then we will do just fine. Will be interesting to see who they choose as captain, Sarah Taylor?

She can hold her head high knowing the state of the women's game has changed dramatically from when she first started to now and they she has been an important figure in changing it for the better.

She's already a CBE, can they give her anything else?

Questioning her fitness and saying 'oh you missed out on a couple of extra runs'.. People seem to forget she's streets ahead of any other English woman batsmen out there so even if she loses a few single runs its still more than otjers will get. England's women simply only have/had two batswomen and now one has gone, the rest are Rubbish and only there due to low standards currently in the game .

Sad end to her career but hopefully she'll smash thencrap about in women's county stuff and just show the gulf in ability there clearly is no matter how much waffle they want to talk about improving fitness, professionalism etc

Reading between the lines, it seems as though she felt she had to retire before being pushed out of the door....

Sadly that's what I believe has happened. Media and ECB pushing her out.

I think with the new era of professionalism the expectation of success has risen similar to the mens team.

In fact the womens team has been very successful over the last few years. The recent WC guessing those in charge though we should of won it or got to the finals maybe?

“Everyone who knows me - and how much I love playing for England - will appreciate what a difficult decision it has been for me to retire from international cricket," she said.
"It's a decision I've reached after much thought and detailed discussion with [England coach] Mark Robinson and [director of England women's cricket] Clare Connor about what is best for the team going forward.
"I believe now is the right time for a new captain to lead the team forward and for young players to be given more opportunities to make their mark on the international game.
"After honest and open discussions with Mark, it became clear that he wants to build a new team and I fully support that. I would have loved to have carried on and whilst I am disappointed that I won't be doing so, I fully understand and respect what Mark is looking to do. This is a new era and he wants other players to come to the fore to build a strong team."

That is the press release and sounds like the new coach said to her she was not going to be picked. Maybe he felt intimidated by her and felt he could not be in charge while she was there.

Real small minded stuff from ECB to let this happen

So getting rid of the best bat by a mile is a good idea? Clueless.. The rest (Taylor excluded) are simply miles and miles and miles below her standard. We can dress it up and be nice but half that team are simply not very good.

Im reading between the lines because press reports once the team was publically criticised in the press for not being fit enough by the coach you start thinking.......well......put it this way it can show the players and coaches are not together, it can show a rift, it could be the truth, it could be an excuse from the coach......

put it this way...I was surprised to read that publically

absolute Camel in the field she could barely move, but was very good with bat in hand

Thank god dont have to watch her running between the wickets anymore

Will probably be the end of Danni Wyatt's international career as well, convinced she must have been best mates with Edwards to still be getting picked in the team
