Interesting read from my side of the table, only last week were helmet stakeholders invited Upto L'Boro for a review meeting following the implementation of the new safety standard back in early 2014.

Helmet manufacturers, lead Physio for counties, ICC rep, ECB rep. Test house reps. No actual Pros as such though.

Rogers forgets the obvious reason why players aren't heavily involved in safety regulations - lots of them would, like Cook, prefer if there aren't any new ones! Your helmet being able to stop balls hitting you in the face makes obvious sense (even if I do think the fixed grill rule is overly conservative), then it's down to competition between manufacturers to produce helmets players will prefer to use, whether that's lightest/safest/best visibility.

Just a thought. How much of cook's stance is commercially driven? Blanket endorsement contract with GN prohibiting trials of other brands? Handcuffed or unwilling to renegotiate contract to allow for other helmet brands? Perhaps no longer an issue as he seems perfectly happy with the new helmet...

Not quite sure where this particular topic is going, as keepers/close fielders are now required to wear helmets.
Personally , I don't wear one, I can't get used to one, I've tried but feel a lot safer without one
I've been hit in the jaw, and know full well,how much it hurts, and the possible fatal outcome of being hit by a cricket ball.

For years I've ridden motorbikes, and many times not worn a helmet, but would never ever ride without one now.
The reason
I came off the bike a couple of years ago, riding off road, on ice
I landed on my backside, and my head flew backwards hitting the frozen ground very hard,( hard enough to split a £400 arai helmet!)
Without the helmet, well, I really don't want to think about it

I've got a feeling a similar impact from a cricket ball is gonna do similar damage

That's an interesting comparison, did you not wear the helmet on the bike for the same reasons as the not wearing the cricket helmet though? I don't ride bikes but I doubt the helmet restricts your vision? why didn't you wear one?

I can't imagine batting (seam or spin) without a lid, or riding a sports bike without one either for that matter!

Helmets were not compulsory when I first started riding bikes
Plus there's a feeling of freedom whilst not wearing one
It's all subjective and not really PC these days, but that's how it was

I wouldn't ride a bike without decent gloves either
And neither would I bat without gloves on, even knocking up
