Bat rebalancing
« on: May 23, 2016, 04:31:16 PM »

Hello friend,

I have a 2.13 custom G1 grade bat that feels very bottom heavy. To counterbalance, i have 2 SS ton grips on it. However, as a permanent fix, i'm thinking of getting it re-balanced (new handle, shave off wood at the toe etc..) and look forward to your opinion on whom to approach.

My first choice is Laver & Wood , but i'm in the US and they are all the way across the pond in NZ.

 what do you recommend?

update: Without the toe guard and the 2 grips, the bat weights @ 2.10.5

Purely for shipping costs given you are in the US it might be worth checking out Jason at cricketstoreonline

With a bat at 2.13 there gaols be some sizeable willow present to allow it to be rebalanced without replacing a handle etc.

Postage costs to the US aren't too bad currently as you can get next day delivery for around £30 one way.

Thanks! i have purchased from Jason before and my understanding is that he is a retailer and not a bat maker. I could be completely wrong.

True. $30-$50 one way to NZ. not bad but just thinking about options.

I bought a reserve from L&W and it's a 2.14 bat that picks up like a 2.10-2.11. Unbelievable balance and pickup. James mentioned using a heavier handle to achieve this effect. I had to weigh the bat to check if it really was a 2.14!

Jason refurbs and often shapes his own bats. A weight reduction/ balance will be easy for him.

My teammates got weight reduction on 2 bats and he did a decent job. Should cost you $14 one way by USPS.

Hi Kris,

I live in US too, I have sent my Bats for re-handle and refurbishing to Laver couple of times. Great service. Shipping cost is bit pain, but I would put my bat in the Laver hand for refurbish any time. My RNS is 5 years old and is re-handled and refurbished, still going strong. Almost 4 guys in my team use it. And my reserve is refurbished by Laver looks new this season.

@sunny_Kris , Reach out to @crictech . He is based in California and can do bat repairs. He replaced a handle on my bat and did a good job.

You can cut off 1/2 inch from the top of handle and sanding on the toe.   That should bring it down to 2.10-11

That won't necessarily be good for the balance though.  Removing about an oz of willow lower down the blade will Improve the pick up. As others have said, there is likely to be a decent amount of wood in it so you won't miss a little bit.

Heavy handles can be good to balance a bat when making it. Adding one in later to a pre made bat will help to rebalance it, but potentially add more dead weight which will cause issues if you're not used to using it.

sweet! im amazed by the balance of my reserve and will most probably end up sending it to James and co.

Thank you, that makes a lot of sense.
I'm only moderately uncomfortable with my bottom heavy 2.13. I guess it should be fine playing with a 2.13 that picks up lighter.
