Hello all,

Was unsure where to start this topic, its mainly for me to do a little research for work, as we consider or toy with the idea of stocking our cricket centre, with smaller brands. By that I dont mean any disrespect to such brands, but I mean smaller as in less mainstream, so not the usual Kook, GM and Gray Nics.

Firstly, do we know of any brands that work on a sale or return basis with cricket shops/stockists?

And if so, what sort of percentages are they generally working with.

I understand I may be better off approaching the brands privately, to get an accurate idea, but thought I'd open it up to the forum to see if anyone already deals in this manner, and the possibility that one of these brands on the forum may come forward with some extra info.

We would also be looking to invite a clothing brand/ manufacturer to come on board and stock our shop, and also kit our coaches out in the gear, and set up an online club shop for our merchandise.

Any help would be appreciated

I'm not sure any brands would be that keen to discuss percentages openly on the forum.

Not sure this would happen TBH, I do remember Aldred used to do this then I remember him stating he was stopping it because he got to many bats back with dents and scuffs in them from ppl wafting them around and being continually taken down and put back on stands.

Hi Guys.

A bit of inside info here. I am currently dealing with some of the smaller bat makers and as far as I am aware sale or return is not an option.

Instead  of going to manufactures  you will have a better chance  with a bigger store. They may be happy to stock a small range in your cricket centre  on sale or return  basis. The profit margins will be low but you are not really taking any risk  are you.

Cheers for input so far guys, yeh didnt think it would be a popular choice for suppliers, but was interested to see what you all thought and perhaps what suppliers views were

Sale or return isn't great as a business model to use for a small company, Yes you might have the kudos of getting your brand into a store but you never really know if you have sold a product or not until after the agreed cut off return date.

How long are you willing to wait for payment of the goods whilst having to cover the cost price yourself? What happens if you think the goods have gone well only to have a load of it returned at the end of the season as "unsold" and as mentioned earlier not in a brand new dent/mark free condition?

From an accounting perspective it much simpler to just deal on a straight sales/invoice policy as at least then you know where you stand.

Selling on consignment is one way traffic pretty much so supplier generally is desperate to get rid of stock. From a retailers point of view if he has 2 bats to sell, 1 already paid for by him, the other he can return if unsold, which do you think he will try and sell first?

Also I wouldn't stock a brand that sells directly to the public.
