We play our local T20 league on a very crappy pitch which is basically a grassy ground rolled multiple times to make a flatter surface for cricket pitch. Short balls often comes to knee height and good length bounces over the head  :(

After our first season we try to avoid playing on back foot or try sweeping the ball towards leg side due to very low bounce specially from the spinner. Front foot and straight bat shots worked well for me on a uneven bounce pitch.

Put the cut and pull shots back in the kit bag for days like this...

Just like jd mentioned, we play here on decent crappy pitch with mat on, for a one day game (40 over an innings), Avoid back foot shots, Cut and pull for the first 8 to 10 overs you play. Then you might get used to the pitch and will be comfortable playing your shots.

It can be a total joke sometimes playing on these pitches.
Play the ball as late as possible and just realise that you will get out to a pea roller or one that sticks in the pitch.
Don't forget to question your sanity after you've traveled miles to a game and got out cheap because the pitch was (no swearing please)

Get out quick, go home and remember to never play at that ground again. Ruins the game

This ^ and play it straight and be prepared to wear a few. Try and get as forward as possible, even if it's short as you don't want a roller to get through. It's a tough it out situation but as always with batting, the longer you're in the middle the easier it gets.

Many thanks for all the tips very sensible advice. If chasing a score or in a t 20 when the scoring rate needs to be higher, are there any additional thoughts?

Slog.

In all seriousness if the scoring rate needs to go up there comes a point where you have to start taking some risks, whether that be quicker singles/making ones into twos on the fielders arm or trying to hit over the top and just accepting that if one pea rolls it's tough luck.

Saying that, the pitch is the same for both teams so if you're batting first you will need to seriously rethink what a "good score" is.

Seem to have spent a career playing on these type of pitches you get the grub hunter which wacks you on your ankle the ball that leaps up and smashes you in the throat just play your normal game and as previously stated except that the dodgy bounce may get you out.

Batting out of your crease helps if only to get you closer to the pitch of the ball. I played on the same track twice at the weekend, on the Saturday the bowlers were a tad sharp so it was harder to move out. On the Sunday we faced slower bowlers and - batting out of the crease - really helped to negate the bounce and meant I was driving more confidently.

No problems with the cut shot if it's outside off peg. I agree with the rest, it's almost a case of parking yourself on the front foot and being prepared to wear a few.

Teams I've played against who've grown up on terrible pitches all tend to bat pretty similarly:

- Get forward to 99% of deliveries.
- Block anything on the stumps, nothing attacking at all.
- Throw the kitchen sink at anything that's not on the stumps.
