Off spin - recovery when being hit all over
« on: May 31, 2016, 12:54:30 PM »

Having had the unfortunate reality of getting smashed about the park (30 off an over) and very little experience of bowling spin I had no reply and kept getting smashed the ought the over, got a few tips off @roco and @hosk how to recover (go very full and flatter) I'm just wondering if anyone else has any other tips/ideas on how to stem the tide!

I'd like to add before that one over I'd gone for 2-13 off 3 before this one!

Thanks

I'd go opposite, slow and loopy!

I bowl leggies so slightly different but if I get hit for 6 the next ball is bowled with more flight and a lot slower.

If I hit a spinner for 6 I instantly expect the next ball to be a dart.

Options, in my view, are either flat and very straight or slower, good hang time and importantly wider of off stump so the batsman has to reach for it and can't just swing.

Also - accept that it's going to happen sometimes - and it can be very frustrating - work hard on your different option delivery in the nets, that's where you can get it down to pat in an unpressurised environment.

I got tap on Saturday coming on to bowl when the big smack was on.

I came on again on Sunday against a rampant pair and managed to stick to a plan and pick up 3 wkts without going through my usual stroppy routine.

Get that variation up to snuff and you've got somewhere to go - I must admit, I usually go even slower if I've been hit over the top.

To be fair, it was the first 3 balls that let you down. Two long hops and 5 wides, put you at 15 conceded off 2 balls. The two 6's were just good shots. Consistency is the key and minimising the bad drag down ball. You can't stop the batsman playing good shots but you can control what you bowl him.

The batsmen in question was backing away and clearing front leg

So if I was bowling my spin I would go wide Yorker as we said

If he is clearing front leg his power shots will be to leg if you can get a wide Yorker in there is not much he can do unless you can get a straight flat Yorker in

I take all the pace off it, and make the batsmen generate the pace and power to take me on

I played at a small ground Saturday and bowled with the short boundary behind me, so knew I had to bowl cleverly. I took all pace off it and ended up with 5, at 5 am over so.

You haven't mentioned if you are a  a finger spinner or a wrist spinner and what's your stock ball. Since you have "very little experience of bowling spin", I suggest developin a stock ball or delivery - something that you can comfortably and regularly bowl without giving away runs and pushing batter to defend.

This is cricket and poo happens. You had a bad day (or an over). Think about big picture. If you want to develop as a spinner, you'd have to develop a stock ball. Then, you'd have to work on variations. There is always going to be a batter out there who will hit you out of the park but you want to stay focused on your progress (accuracy and variation). Good things will eventually happen for you. :)

My stock ball is ok, decent pace and flight get turn and bounce and I feel o can control it when I get the positioning on the crease right, I'm a finger spinner (right arm) and I've only been bowling twirly stuff since January so I know it takes time!

Just want to know the options o have to work on :)

He is an off spinner and a finger spinner

He has a stock ball which was good as spin and dip but they guy lined that up and it has never happened to him before

It will come with experience

I am an off spinner and I usually bowl way outside off and slower to begin with when such a situation arises. Most batsmen tend to slog towards cow corner so that helps. You might also end up getting a wicket.
If you bowl darts outside off then those may still go for runs from outside edges.

Flighted off spin way outside off stump, you will be fine just set your fielders on offside
