Oh wow... looks like they've only seen cricket bats in pictures! So many many things wrong with this, and a ridiculously over-elaborate method of machining.
That's before you even get to thinking are they seriously machining a complete bat/handle from a single piece of wood?! Definitely not willow either.

I think you have missed the point of the video @edge ... its just a cnc machine with multiple heads. IN theory, that machine could make 8 bats at a time, (8 heads).
Yes its not Willow and yes the whole one piece is wrong, but with the right input and right software, you could make lots of bats. Gunn and moore obviously use CNC and so do B3 as far as i can read so how is this any different apart from obviously not having the expertise in what works for cricket bat shapes?

Or they are simply trying to sell some multi head CNC machines and have targeted an english market with the obvious conclusion its not sex that sells, its grains!!!

Multi head CNCs are hardly exciting new tech though... @Boondougal you're most likely right, just a marketing exercise.

What's different is that B3/GM use an appropriate machine for the job, and do it properly!

You are right, hardly new tech. I dont think you can say its not appropriate machinery however as clearly the cnc works, its makes the shape of a bat(whether you think its a good shape or not,that's fact) . If these people had access to the software GM or B3 have, whats to say they cant produce a bat with quality.

CNC operating software is effectively part of the machine, not written by the people using it. Programming a machine to produce what you want it to is the simple part.

I dont know how much these machines cost, have you heard a figure?  Yes software is not written by those using it. You seem like you know a lot about the CNC machines companies use. I reckon it has potential, will come down to a company taking a chance. Agree to disagree as i dont think you can see the other side

Wouldn't like to tie myself to a figure on this particular type of machine, but a lot! I work in aerospace automation so looking after CNC machines is part of my daily job, and also B3 are pretty open about what they use. Yeah definitely you could use this to produce bats if you really wanted to, wouldn't want to come across like I'm just taking the mickey because of the daft bat it's producing in the video, but other types of machine are available that are less complicated (i.e. less expensive and more reliable) and I would expect more accurate. It's not exactly quick either by the looks of things!

The B3 does look far simpler than this machine i have never stated it wasnt.  AS for the costings and working of the machine, Im going to play devils advocate, do you know the costings and the ins and outs of how it runs?  There is no way you can tell from that video if it would be more accurate or not. It may well be less accurate but whats to say it wont be??

By the looks to it is working horizontally on the video while the B3 one is going vertically so of course would be different.
Using the harder timber( look like some form of hardwood in the video) may cause it to be slower,
Whats to say it couldn't run at a similar speed to the B3 one, plus the added bonus of 8 at a time

I just think there are so many variables in the video so making assessments could be risky without seeing it under same conditions

Fully respect your profession and you would know more than most about CNC

Now what really interesting is the the number of people using copy lathe/moulding spindles which is more interesting.

GM use a machine that works on multiple clefts. I haven't been to visit them for about 18 months so i can't remember if it is 4 or 6, but this isn't something new to the industry.
