Which Sandpaper?
« on: June 10, 2016, 09:04:57 PM »

Evening all,

Doing a few refurbs and I've got myself most of the necessities apart from sandpaper grades 240, 300 and 400 as they weren't available in B&Q, guessing it will be an Amazon/eBay job to find these.

Question is, are there any brands or types you bought before that worked pretty well for you in the past?

I use smith and arrow sandpaper, it's very good quality but I chose it as they did sanding dics which fitted my sander and weren't really cheap flimsy ones or over the top expensive, however I don't think they do sandpaper sheets of your sanding by hand. If you are doing band sanding klingspor seems to get a good review from @Seniorplayer but personally never used it. I was speaking to David at White willow cricket a week or two back about this and he mentioned how he would use cheap b&q own brand silicon carbide paper, I was shocked as I presumed branded stuff is what he would use but he told me how where willow is so soft there's really no need for expensive paper, he stated although he has used expensive paper it only really starts to show a real effect in the results when using hard woods as that's when the consistency of cut etc is really tested. So in short get some of the wet and dry paper from b&q you can get a 10 pack for about £5 of mixed grits and just spend a good amount of time getting an even finish rather than spending lots of money on sandpaper, just make sure it isn't too cheap that it falls apart

Aluminium oxide paper is what I would recommend. You can get it on a roll for a few quid at toolstation/screw fix. However, some of you guys are going way too fine in my opinion. Personally I use a 80 grit, 120 and finish at 240. I use a random orbit sander upto 240 then give it a hand sand with 240 grit. in my experience there is no need to go any finer if the sanding with the papers is completed thoroughly.
I would not recommend wet and dry paper as you make get a dark smear from the carbide in the paper. It is mainly Designed for plastics/metals. That is my opinion. I would like to know what an actual bat maker does.
