Salix or Newbery???
« on: June 13, 2016, 09:08:24 AM »

In the next year or so I'm going to consider replacing one of my match bats as the older of the two has sentimental value to me and I would prefer to retire it before it gets broken, I'm considering Newbery or Salix as replacements but they have very similar shapes that I personally quite like and both are fairly local to go and visit if I did choose them (Salix is a lot closer but I don't mind travelling to Newbery). I used Salix bats as a Colt and am keen to use them again but I can't help but like the Newbery Kudos. Has anyone used bats from both brands and had a preference?

Please note that this is my personal opinion only:

You won't go wrong with either, the difference is that you could go down to Salix and pick something up, whereas my recent experience was that the Newbery shop was very poorly stocked, very disorganised and had some seriously ugly willow on the shelves. Therefore I would be tempted to order a Newbery that has been hand-picked by one of the forum sponsors such as @Uzi Sports.

My Newbury GT 5 star is a gun.  I would also love a Salix but never used one so can't compare.

If you're close enough to visit Salix you might as well go and see Matt at Hell 4 Leather.
He makes a decent cup of tea and offers you biscuits when you visit, so instantly jumped to the top of my favourite bat makers list (and that was before we'd got round to discussing bats...)

Salix everyday (although I may be biased) I say that though as regardless of your budget you can pick and select from hundreds of clefts and Andrew will make it for you and give you no BS if your budget is £200 you will get a gun of a bat for £200 not made to stretch to top end. As stated with Newbery you pick from ready made bats and that's your only option.
Never seen a bad Salix and hardly every hear a complaint about one either

I definitely agree that Salix bats are a mark of beauty as I had several junior bats custom made and designed by Andrew, I remember as a Colt I had a size 5 Pod that was slightly adjusted by Andrew and even put on the Daemon stickers because I was obsessed with red on my bats. I thought the decision would be very easy to go back to Salix as I really did love my bats from Salix previously but I've heard so many players at my club say good things about Newbery that I thought I'd ask just to find out more information as I've only really used two companies bats in the past and had little experience outside of them

I used to love Newbury I had an uzi 5 star 3 years ago that was the best bat I've ever owned. However last year I went to the shop and had the same poor service, disorganised and really ugly blades on the shelf. I think when the 5 star range was 130_150 quid it was the best value for money but now very overpriced. I've got a salix wasp graded bat at the moment and it is fantastic. I'd go salix from now on.

I agree Salix are fantastic bats, my Pod a few years ago was a gun bat, I remember in an Under 13 game my second ball I just punched the ball back down the ground and it flew to the boundary for 4, got my 27* and retired in no time

I have a graded salix, they truly do grade down absolute stunners, this bat would have retailed at £145, and goes like a gun. I dont know how to find the good grades ones tho, i was lucky on the bay of E.

I've just got a newbery Krakatoa sps pics on chads 2015 sale thread and it's lovely only tapped it up and it feels amazing! It's all on personal preference and I'm sure either brand will give you a great bat
