Im going to play devils advocate? Why do you think you need more bat speed?

Few exercises are always weight training ie swinging a heavier bat to strengthen the arms and wrists.
Bloke in Australia had a training aid which was 7lb and was designed for it.

Keep the bat low rather than pick it up like modern players as the natural action of picking it up and giving a full swing improves bat speed rather than half a swing. Also cock your wrists to generate hand speed if you are going to pick it up Gooch like.

That bloke is Josh Gavan (brand is JPGavan). He's copped some flack on this forum but I recently got seven bat refurbs and a new custom bat from him . Lovely work on the refurbs and the custom is a cracker too. Also got a chance to pick up his 4lb 'Stroke' training aid ( while at his workshop when watching my custom being made ), which is the bat you are referring to (seven pounder version no longer exists , i think) . I'm thinking of getting one because after picking one up it's not as ridiculous as it might first seem .

I'd say one of the following, reduce your back lift, weight training, a training aid ( like the jpgavan stroke) or even consider a lighter bat.

Josh is good guy and is switched on. i tried a 7lb and it was far to heavy, 4lb seems a far better option

Controversial I know, but better timing of the ball might increase your bat speed? Hitting on the downswing should give you far more batspeed than hitting on the follow through. There's a case study here:

But practising with a heavy bat will probably make you stronger - which in turn should give you the control to time the ball better.

I would try something completely left field, but play some squash and table tennis for example and get your armswrists used to moving faster.

I am not sure about the use a heavier bat option on it's own, but maybe as part of an over all plan.

Practicing some hockey and hitting in hockey is another option as the stiff sticks used help fast hands.

You need a number of different things for this, there is no single solution.

I don't really understand why myself, being in England I've not been able to see any of his work in the flesh but I've enjoyed the videos he uploads to Youtube. He obviously knows what he's doing with the brand and is a skilled craftsman from what I have seen.

Surely a young lad who hand makes bats to order is exactly the kind of brand we should be encouraging on Custom Bats Forum? Maybe I'm missing something tough...

Having caught the end of one of buttlers interviews the othersay, he talks alot about "lagging" his shots, eg slowing the initial stroke down enough to then really require / force himself to use the fast hands &  bat speed to generate the power.

Id imagine we'd all struggle initially with this sort of technique, but its always worth a try in the nets for a few sessions.

John Harmer , in his coaching videos, talks about shoulder rotation preceding the release of hands or even swinging forward of the bat when playing a powerful shot. What Jos is saying seems to align with Harmer's coaching: you line up the shot by rotating shoulders in the line of the shot before unleashing the hands and wrists which propel the bat forward.

Can't find the interview on Sky but also watched it and thought he meant something a bit different to that ha. Maybe just a difference in how you've seen/typed it, but what I understood was that he leaves the bat behind in the shot, swinging with his arms first and then the hands/wrists only come into play right at the end of the shot, giving the extra whip through the ball. As InternalTraining said tbh. Makes sense to me, not something I've tried deliberately but I feel like when I'm hitting the ball hardest I'm swinging that way.

I chat to Josh and he helps me out. He has a loyal following. I've knocked two of his bats and both are flying.
