England The Next Generation (Make it so Number 1)!
« on: August 24, 2016, 06:58:09 PM »

So - imagine we can fast-forward 20 months or so, and a few England stalwarts have hung up their boots, imagine what a team of youngsters we could pick.

Here's my effort:

Gubbins
Bell-Drummond
Duckett
Root *
Bairstow
Stokes
Foakes+
Woakes
Rashid
T Curran
Wood
12th Man - S Curran

That's not a bad team that!!

Ansari seems to have gone backwards this year (certainly doesn't seem to have taken many wickets this year), and Foakes is wasted at 8 - other than that, a fine looking side, my tail-end chum!

Gubbins
Bell-Drummond
Duckett

Foakes+
Woakes
Rashid

T Curran
Wood
12th Man - S Curran

Plus both Gubbins and Robson are a better prospect than Lyth at the moment I feel.

I don't see broad retiring in the next 2 years. Assuming Jimmy retires, it is unlikely that England would drop their best/most experienced bowler barring a terrible downturn in form

If we asked a slightly different question - say, a team of players who will be under 30 at the start of the 2018 English season (so the randomness of who retires etc is taken out of it) then the resources look pretty plentiful.  The "First XI" is a bit of a top of the head thing, there are lots of either/ors...

Hameed
Lees
Root
Duckett
Bairstow
Burnham
Stokes
Woakes
Rashid
Wood
Jamie Overton

On top of which you have, batting wise:Burns, Westley, Browne, Robson, Gubbins, Bell-Drummond, Northeast, Clarke, Ballance, Hain, Roy, Hales, Vince and Abell.
Foakes, Buttler and Wheater are other options with the gloves.
Crane, Rafiq, Leach are the spinners.
And seamers? Fisher, Willey, Ball, two Currans (though Sam really would need Stokes to be injured), Craig Overton, Archer, Mahmood, Porter...

I think its a shift in the modern game where test specialists are unlikely to come through. I think the game will evolve into moulding one day/t20 players or more likely what aus have done with Warner, bring that type of player to the test game and let him play naturally

So we've all decided James Vince can't play?

I personally think he's got a fantastic test future ahead of him, just needs to step away for the winter and work on his technique a little. Lots of promise though IMO.

Yes totally agree with that, hes got the talent but you need brains also.im sure there are coaches available to help him develop a test match game...ramps seems to be doing well with some of the batsmen we have.
If i was vince is find the toughest possible batting conditions(used to be australia not sure if it still is) and winter there
Got to tighten up against quality bowling...i hope he does.

I think Sam Billings may feature in some way or another soon too.

No one has Roy in their main teams with a couple of batting positions up for grabs England may have a look at him for the bangladesh series.two tests and three one day games.
I think Vince will be told to work on his game, ballance will go and be persevered with and Hales...well i would pick hameed of lancs instead right now
But Roy might get a go in the middle order and if so could feature in these 2017/2018 teams.
Hes a far better bet than Hales.
Dont think Engkand will go back to Bell.
