Challange to bat makers
« on: September 10, 2016, 06:32:58 AM »

Since the summer is coming to an end and the season will be off soon, I am wondering if our bat whittlers can figure out as to what's the lightest weight that can be achieved on these specs?

1 - Very high sweet spot with duck bill toe. Spine at about 55 mm
2- Edge size about 40 mm,
3- Toe edge about 30 mm, toe mid about 32 mm
4 - Shoulders edge about 25 mm
5 - Full face width of 108 mm. Reasonable amount of concaving but nothing crazy.
6 - Round Handle
7 - Hard pressed and fully knocked in.
8 - No toe guard and single grip to keep the weight as low as possible.

Weight depends on cleft selection. If you find something very light then it could be a low starting weight. Probably easier mentioning the weight you are looking for as it may be achieved with a few minor tweaks

To be honest with you, not more than 2 lbs 8oz
What tweaks were you thinking?

That's going to be a big bat for 2.8 and will probably need a pretty light cleft to get near that, especially eith the shoulder edge and toe dimensions.

What's the reason you want the toe and shoulder dimensions like that?

I need this toe for stability and perhaps sometimes to deal with miss-hits.

And thick shoulders is purely for aesthetic looks. I am not a fan and paper thin shoulders. Perhaps we can reduce the shoulder size a little, if it helps achieving the desired weight?

I think you are going to need to make a few more sacrifices to get to that weight. A few mms off all dimensions would probably help.

What grade are you looking for and what's your budget?

To be honest to get a bat made to these specifications you are better off speaking to a Pakistani firm and buy one of their overdried slightly narrow beasts.

The moisture content in UK bats makes this difficult.

I would not expect an over dried cleft made like this to last more than about 500 runs...

Great, that would last me until I retire from playing!  :(

GM Mogul has kind of pressing and dimensions you are looking for. Max edge is 38 mm but I don't think 2 mm makes a big difference in a bat of that spec.

Yeah, I am open to some suggestions. Let me know what can be done to make this happen?
I am not worried about willow grade at all. It can be grade 4 with dead knots and criss crossed grains, as long as it achieves the goal, and keeps a lid on the price as its my experimental prototype.

I think your measurements are a little  iffy;

Yeah that just looks wrong!

Shows the power of b3 though, see your idea before it's made. And avoid a wasted cleft.
