All through my life I have always put my pads on so the end of the strap is on the outside of my leg (So the straps from the different pads don't rub against each other). Everyone else I know personally has always done this as well. However I did notice the other day that Joe Root wears his straps on the inside of his leg. So I did a bit of Google Images research and I can say that at least 95% of the international cricket players I searched wore their straps like Joe Root on the inside of their leg. Why is this? There must be a good reason for it as surely it makes more sense to wear them the other way around to prohibit the rubbing of straps.

I don't expect anyone to know an answer but its just something i noticed...

I've always done it with the straps on the inside so the ball doesn't flick the strap and the umpire thinks it's a nick... Have done it this way since under 12's ( they were buckles back then...no Velcro) and I'm 48 now. That's what I was told when I first started and have done it this way for that very reason

I was always told to keep the buckles on the inside. I believe pad buckles were more like metal buckes on your belt and could sound like a nick. I also thought pads were designed that way.

Always told to wear them on the outside to prevent them trying to undo each other when they rub.

But with my Puma pads, the straps are short anyway so no chance of them sticking out anyway so I guess it wouldn't matter.

I wear them on the inside. Don't want to potentially be out with the ball clipping my overhanging straps on the outside.

Seems to be however you want . Plenty of pros wear them on the outside so pays your money, takes your choice

Buckles on pads.......yeah had a pair or 2 of those old style pads...wonder how many guys on this forum were playing when these were around??  I think we're showing our age here by admitting this fact mate...

Had a pair with buckles, Slazengers if I remember well. Went with my first proper bat a GN World Cup which I still have 30 years on.

When the pads with velcro straps came out first, I thought they looked odd (all the 3 straps were thin on the earlier models, if I remember correctly). Moved onto these about 9 years back and now love them, especially those with wide padded straps.

I think your voting is a little flawed.... I wear the "plastic" buckles on the outside so the end of the straps are on the inside but back in the day I wore the "metal" buckles on the inside cause that's where the strap ends were.... Hope that makes sense with all the young whipper snappers on here

Didn't you used to get told to keep metal buckles on the inside because you might get given out caught  behind if the umpire heard a noise of them?
