Cricket - Graveyard of major sports brands

I know it's ICJ, but there's a few discussion points in this article and perhaps a slight under appreciation of the aims of Nike/Adidas in sponsoring cricket.

I enjoyed reading it, either way. And I do agree with some of the caution points made with regard to smaller brands.

Adidas have signed an extremely notable test match player from January that would suggest they are in it for the long haul.

I think the key difference between Adidas and Nike/Reebok, is that Nike and Reebok were both run from India, as a marketing tool to help drive interest in those 2 brands in the India market. India has been a failure for Nike. They're losing money hand over fist, and closing down stores rapidly. I think India is a lot tougher to conquer, than many would believe, but the opportunity seems so great so we continually see sportswear brands trying.

Adidas is run in the UK as a speciality sport, alongside their Rugby/Hockey/Cycling. It's away from HQ, run by a team who know what they're doing.

I think Amos is right in saying that the slow cautious approach for smaller brands is a good one. Particularly if they want to stick around. That said, I imagine Phantom/BlankBats are not yet full time enterprises - so they can afford to be cautious.

All I read is selling tool to rank highly in SEO / google. Pointless article (does it actually make any points).

The reason why most small brands/ bedroom brands come and go is that there is so many of them and they all are doing exactly the same thing and it is survival of the fittest - to quote a fellow forum member - "the pie aint getting no bigger".

The reason why big brands come and go - is that they overestimate the size of the pie and spend too much. I am not classing NB in this statement by the way. Actually the people that feel the effects most are the established cricket brands.

In my opinion, Adidas are now going about it the right way, not spending so much and concentrating on product.

yep completely agree about the amount of smaller brands and size of the pie etc.... what i would also say is that the quality of the majority of the smaller brands is also excellent so the market becomes even more diluted.

i was actually thinking the other day if you are thinking of getting a new bat these days where do you actually start - there is just a ridiculous amount of choice - especially for the mr. joe bloggs club cricketer

The majority of the cricketing community - and I exclude the vast majority of Forum members in this statement, will either 1. see player X using a branded cricket bat on't tele and either go into their local store, or search online. Or 2. get their bat from a local source - bobs bats out of someones boot, local small bat maker or sticker seller. This is our biggest challenge - how to go National without the need for big profile players, we are getting there but it is a slower process.

i am always interested when someone shows up at my club with a new bat and i ask them where did they get it etc..... and you are right a lot of the time it is number 1

Nothing wrong with that at all quite right. The more sponsorship big brands give out, the higher costs of equipment is passed on to the general public.

I really genuinely believe the small market can only expand, not saying it's easy to run a business and make money, but demand will surely increase.

Bats priced at 400-600 is getting unaffordable for club players, and their parents who buy kids the latest bats and equipment
