Public Liability insurance for winter nets. Do we need it?
« on: November 22, 2016, 10:32:21 AM »

Morning All,

Quick question:

We are changing netting venue this winter and they have asked for our public liability certificate. I organised nets last year and there was no mention. Do we need it and how do you obtain it?

Cheers

Never heard of it before. Your club should have it anyway though I believe.

Most nets in Kent ask for it the club should have insurance so just ask for a copy and that should be fine

Yes you do the venue you are using should also have it also  whoever pays your club insurance should be able to tell you if your club has it and where it can be located .
Also it is a legal  requirement to have the certificate on displayat the your club

Finally, a topic I feel vaguely confident commenting on!

I underwrite liability insurance for a living, the venue will have the coverage, however it seems strange to me that they would ask for your cover. Unless they can prove you were acting negligently in the use of the nets (via CCTV) then they would struggle to bring a claim against your club.

Also, just as a point, you don't have to have a Public Liability certificate displayed in your clubhouse, most companies wont even issue a certificate for this cover. As technically, it's not a legal requirement in the same way that Employers Liability is, for instance.

a couple of years back our club had a big disagreement with our previous nets venue when someone smashed a window pane in a door of the sports hall we were using for nets and they wanted us to pay for replacing it!

they said that we weren't using the hall correctly because when the window got smashed we couldn't have actually been in the nets at the time and were using to hard balls!

True! Watched somebody cream one back in the opposite net once, hit the bowler straight in the face in his follow through! A mess! Making things worse, it was the bowlers first time at the new club!

Seems a shame that we have to remind people each winter.

1. Always watch the net
2. Don't walk behind the bowlers arm
3. Don't go head first into the net to retrieve balls.
4. Don't do drugs.

5. When a ball gets smacked back into the queue of waiting bowlers, don't stick your foot out and flick it up into someone else's face (not bitter, honest).

Very true.

Almost forgot:

6. Don't turn up without your subs...
