I thought I'd do a running topic of a couple of reforms I have on the go.
Yesterday morning a teammate dropped a couple of SS Masters round to me for a refurb. Some of you may recognise both of these bats, as both were mine and both were reviewed when I received them.

My mate has asked for both to be completely stripped back to white willow (including removing the TON stamps) so he can apply some stickers when they're returned to him.

Does anyone know what causes these strange red marks on the face of a bat?

First one I decided to tackle was the Master 1000.

I originally purchased this one from Cricmart in April 2015, and sold it to my teammate a couple of months later having knocked it in but never used it.

As this bat has had the most use, I had a feeling the scuff sheet could be hiding something nasty. I will be removing all the stickers and sanding back to one colour of willow, so I planned to repair any damage I found first, and will refurbish one everything is fixed up and dry again.

First things first I removed the scuff sheet. The first thing I noticed was that the inside edge looks to have lead a hard life


Upon closer inspection, there were a few cracks along the grains. Please excuse the lifted willow (that will be sorted in due course)


The inside edge appears to have delaminated "a few grains in" which I will need to glue

If have to get the lippy out to replicate those cherries 🍒!

Or just had plenty of use?

Amos and Paul have done some really useful videos on YouTube on how to get scuff sheet and stickers off mate, should give you some tips on getting the sheets off without any willow tear out 😉

I sold it to my mate in 2015, having just finished oiling and knocking it in. He applied a scuff sheet and has used it as his number one since, so it's had 2 full season of use (about 700 runs, plus net use through it).
I think it's a combination of having plenty of use and drying out a bit over the 2 years he's had it.

I have a similar delam-crack in my match bat's inner edge but glueing hasn't kept the strip of wood down. Do you normally put a vice/pressure device after glueing?

Cut up a bat grip into half inch rounds and use them as a clamp.

You are best off trying to lift the delamination as much as possible then gluing

That type of  split can  easily be sanded  flat and rounded as glueing rarely holds.

Use a needle and syringe to get the glue right into the crack. Modern glues are often stronger than the timber itself.
