« on: January 07, 2017, 03:09:38 PM »

Fellow members,

Looking at getting either evospeed 1 or evopower 1 mens batting pads. Anyone has weights of these and and recommendation among the two.

Thanks in advance

@adb club cricketer I've got a set of 2015 Evopower SE's. Don't have the weight for them though, happy to get it for you tomorrow if you're interested. Very good protection (Solid Knee Cup, good padding on the inside) One thing I will say is that the straps are short. No need to fold them over, some people like that, some don't. Nicely padded. Nice construction, used them for a season now (Bought around this time last year in PDC sale, £60) no signs of wear/tear though I don't tend to get wrapped on the pads too much.

Thanks mate for the info. I am not looking at the Evopower SEs as I believe they are heavier than what I would like though I am sure they offer top protection. I am really looking for decent protection pads that are more lightweight. Thanks again!

No worries. If you're after Puma, but looking at lightweight, have you seen the EvoSpeed SL? (Super Light). They are a bit unorthodox but if lightweight is what you're after!

I bought the 2015 evospeed 6000. Horrible pads , but I thank them for pushing me to buy morrants !
I'm 6ft2 and normally go ok with standard mens size pads , but the evospeeds were a bit on the small side . The top hat doesn't bend in at all , so if you have a compact back lift /down swing you'll clip the top hat with your gloves or bat . The knee padding is a bit less than reassuring and they are the noisiest pads ever . I mirror-batted with them once , decided I  hate them .....when my current net pads die I may use them , otherwise they'll stay new in the wardrobe mocking me indefinitely.

@GoodLeave  Thanks for the suggestion. Do the Evospeed SLs have good reviews around here. From the images, it looks like the top hat will stick out hindering the bat swing. Also, observed that mccullum pads have three straps but the Evopseed SLs come with 2 straps, not sure if this is a good thing or bad.

@Biggie Smalls Thanks for sharing the experience. So did you stick to morrants since? Are you satisfied with the morrants? I tried a few cheaper version of the moulded pads before such as the moulded offerings from SG, SS but they were too  thick and bulky around the legs despite the light weights. I didn't like them as a result. Are the morrants slimmer around the legs?

Hi @adb club cricketer . The puma top hat issue ( with evospeed 6000 , or any of the 'stormtrooper' pads ) is a big negative for me . The 2 straps , though , are a major positive .
Yeah I have stuck to morrants since . I love them . I did take a gamble though because I can see them not fitting well on some leg shapes . Personally , I have long , skinny 'chicken legs' and I find that the sides wrap so far around my legs that they don't get in the way . People with really chunky , thick calves may also like them since the sides might not wrap around much at all and therefore not get in the way . If you've used 'ambidextrous' pads before and found the inner sides smash up against each other a lot then you'd probably find the same issue occuring with most ambidextrous pads ,  including morrants . If you've not had this issue , then morrants might be a goer .
Basically , i don't find them feeling bulky because they are so snug , they wrap around and hug your calves,  and the top hat angles in nicely . But they still feel like ambidextrous pads , and some people reckon the top hat angles in too far , and that they are 'chunky' . Ultimately,  you need to try on a pair , or do what I did and take a gamble ( keep in mind that morrants should be easy enough to sell on ) .

@adb club cricketer

Any time.

Can't vouch for them I'm afraid, not only have I never worn a pair, I've never actually seen a pair in the wild. The £100+ price tag and the unorthodox set up probably explains it. I didn't realise Bmac's had 3 straps, I thought I'd seen two straps when he played his last test? Must have imagined it.

If I'm honest, I'd think 2 straps would make them move around more. Guess this is there price you pay for lightness!

Agree on the top hat. Looks very rigid and flat, not raked inwards like most pads.
