A nice surprise!

A mate of mine was gifted an Icon 505 with a grainsheet on by his missus.
Firstly, I didn't know this grade existed, secondly the icon seems to be a few years back. But bat stockers in Denmark have a lot of old bats lying around, so not too surprised.
Thing is, I looked at the back of the bat, and that actually looked lovely, so we decided to rid it of the grainsheet. This is what we found!

Why would you cover that?

It's a ninja GM!
So on the surface it's a 505, and yet remove the cloak and it's an Original!! Or even an OLE!!
Like others already said...WHY!?!?

That's a typical 808. Grainy & half heartwood.
Great luck there

Wow that must be a pleasant surprise. I also have 505 icon. I might do the same.
Would you mind sharing a pic of the back of this bat?

I would if I could. As stated, it's a buddy's bat. When I get a chance, I'll take a photo.

Thanks! My bat has 5-6 visible grains in the back. I wanted to make sure before I peel off the grain sheet.

I would think this is the exception rather than the norm. Most bats with the artificial cover would look quite bad without it. I peeled off my 505 a year ago to try to reduce weight and I found butterfly grains, all twisted with multi color underneath even though the back of the bat had decent 6 grains without any butterfly grains. I guess most would be better off with the artificial cover as it also acts as a scuff sheet while making it look good.

A few years back, a forumte (no longer of this parish) went on a tour of SDs and bought a selection of low grade covered bats. A lot of them turned out to be lookers.

What a winner, that's bloody perfect! Lots of straight grains, half and half with the heartwood on the inside edge, what more could you ask for.
