Which bat should I buy?
« on: January 16, 2017, 09:44:32 PM »

Can you please advice on the bat that I should buy?

To state a bit about myself, I am going to play club cricket this year. I am a left handed batsman and mainly a back foot player with my strengths being driving the ball between Mid-Wicket and Cover. I am hence looking for a bat under £200 with a high/mid profile. The two bats that I have selected are from kookaburra (mainly because, i am getting a good deal on them). They are:

KOOKABURRA ONYX 700 and KOOKABURRA INSTINCT 800
Both these bats have a Sweet Spot of approx. 215mm - 235mm from the toe, they are Grade 2 English willow and I am buying a Short handle (weight : 2lb 8oz)

Can you please let me know if you have any insights on these bats.

I cannot stress this enough, the one that feels best in your hands (if you can physically hold them)

If we all followed this simple advice, some of us would not keep going thru bats and then finding out a week later we don't like it!

Which stickers do you prefer? That's the most scientific way of picking a bat  ;)

Or go for the proper CBF process: buy both, sell them at a loss and accumulate at least 6 Bats over the next 12 months ;)

That wouldn't be half as fun though, would it?
(It would save a fortune though...)

Well my main problem is I love picking up bats (other people's) and then think they are better than mine!! Which they often are.

CBF nets are a nightmare!!!

Buy all of the possible bats under £200 then choose the one you want.

In all seriousness I would tap them both up and select the best performing. If you can't do it personally then ask whoever you are buying them from to do it for you.

Take a pair of gloves and swing them both around, play front and back foot shots and see what feels best!

I'm strongly biased but from what you described, I'd go a Grade 3 Blank Bats b-oz with a 1cm shortened blade.  Get in touch with Tai from bb.

I doubt you would get the onyx for 2-8 weight. They tend to come close to 2-10 mostly. Make sure you get its exact weight if it is important to you. Otherwise, the difference between the two is one between modern (onyx has decent edges) vs old style (instinct is all spine no edges). Each has its user base but most folks these days use the modern style bats..

Another info I remember from Paul's videos is that onyx has not so great pickup while instinct has quite thin handle, if any of these are relevant in your decision making :)
