"Why do you need more than one bat?"
« on: January 25, 2017, 07:58:31 PM »

Here on CBF I imagine there are very few, if any, members who only have one bat.

I like to carry at least 2 on match day, and to most net sessions. There are some poeple however who don't understand why it is not only sensible, but essential, to have at least two ready to play bats at any one time. There is a bloke at my club who constantly tells me a second bat is a waste of money. His idea is "buy one bat, use it until it breaks, then buy a new one".

To anyone who only has one bat, what happens when it does break? You're left needing to knock your new purchase in ASAP, or you'll be going into a game with an under prepared bat, which could end in disaster.

What is the point of this waffle you ask? Well, I was just packing my bag for a net tomorrow and I decided to remove the toe guard from my net bat. The damage it was hiding pretty much sums up why I dislike toe guards so much...
This is pretty upsetting to see, but if I only had one bat I'd be totally heartbroken!

The split goes up the blade, ending roughly where my thumb is

And most of the way through the toe!  :(

P.S to anyone who nets with @petehosk don't let him feed the bowling machine. It turns out facing nothing but Yorkers can damage your bat a bit...

I always pack 2 pairs of gloves despite;
A) Rarely batting long enough to require a swap
B) The weather even less rarely getting warm enough to get THAT sweaty
C) Knowing the type of bloke that calls for fresh gloves in club cricket is likely to be ridiculed by 21 other players, the umpires & the scorer

Oh yes... 2 bats too, and never swapped mid match... I need help

Personally I carry 3 bats on match days. Firstly because the one and only time I broke a bat during a game I went onto
Break the spare by having the handle go completely which meant I had to go back to the first bat which has sustained toe damage and caused more damage.
Secondly from last season I look to now use 1 bat all year in each format I'm playing but before each game I have to feel comfortable with that bat and for some reason it could feel amazing the previous week but for some reason just feel odd the next so I can then pick another which just feels right. Plays havoc with my matching kit OCD on the few occasions that happens.
Finally I don't like using other players bats and am not that keen on them using mine tbh

Having one bat is like having A single set of clothes for work, gym, party, going to beach and sleeping.

I always have 4 bats in rotation. 2 match ready bats in the kit and 2 for nets getting match ready.

Ah good thread I like this one. Because it causes me a dilemma.first up I've netted with Pete , he said if it's not challenging it's not worth it. He's is of course right. For the next 40 mins all I got was toe crunchers which I took mainly...on the toe, much to the amusement of fellow net buddies.  :)

I'm basically a 'kit tramp' buy second hand mostly, inexpensive bats(mostly) and I just have 2 bats very occasionally 3.

Last summer I had a beauty h4l, let it to my mate and it snapped literally in half. I was distraught without another bat. So I panicked and fiddled around trying to find something to use. The anxiety was high as I had got back to scoring runs.

At that point I wished I had another bat I could go to.

Oddly enough I had a conversation with my mate about this the other day, I asked him if he was worried about his 400 quid amplus (say what you like about m and h but this one is sublime) breaking at nets, he said he was petrified.

So for me personally I need at least one back up bat I could use just in case of nightmare breakage.

I suspect not many of us just have a couple of bats on here thou  :)

Bola balls damaging bats? Who'd have thunk. ;)

Yup.

I have lived thru that inconvenience and it basically ruined my summer. Never again, I said then.

Different environment/match conditions:
- wet conditions
- t-20
- cheap balls
- change in batting order

Different physical conditions:
- shoulder aches and need for a light weight bat
- hand injury, grip issues.

I think it was a combination of 6 buckets of constant Yorkers, the hard floor and the bola balls. Something had to give eventually and it was the toe of my bat!

There are 16 league matches in our division in 2017 I've already thought about using a different bat for each match doing so will give each of the bats a day out.
