My New Uzi Sports Poseidon
« on: February 03, 2017, 07:43:56 PM »

I've known Asad @Uzi Sports  for quite a long while now and bought quite a few bats off him over the years. Off the top of my head a BAS, an SS, a Salix, two GN's and now this:

Sorry about the standard photos, no idea how some of you get such perfect photos of your bats.

Vital statistics for the nerds are:

Weight: 2.13 & 1/2 after scuff, oiling and knocking in and my preferred salix hybrid grip with half a chevron underneath the bottom hand.
Grains: 10  (couple of little knotty things on the toe.)
Edges & spine: Roughly 40mm and 60mm with no concaving at all that I can see.
Profile: Duckbill/Root profile used for this model, nothing custom.

This was a bit of a departure from the norm for me, I'm a recovering grainoholic. I can't help myself but I've always just gone for bats with a lot of grains, something always just appeals more to me and its probably led to me not always buying the best performing bat every single time in favour of something that just appeared a little more special but perhaps actually wasn't. Having said that I've had a few very grainy bats that were nuclear so its not just a load of hokum. But obviously not a foolproof method by any means. Just like anyone on here I'm always looking for that special bat that has 'everything'. So anyway I decided to let my ears and arms do the thinking this time rather than letting my eyes get in the way and boy has it paid off. I've been in twice in two weeks to visit the shop, the first time they had only just taken a small delivery of the new range so I decided to come back after Uzi had paid a visit to their bat maker, this time armed with an idea of the sort of thing I was looking for. (My usual grain request along with performance, I know, I know we probably all ask for that but you can't blame a bloke for trying!) Anyway he came back with a few that matched up and were grainier than this one but there was just something in the sound this one made off the mallet, as soon as Uzi and I hit it a few times our eyes just lit up and both of us just went 'holy crap, thats a gun then'. The only qualm I had was that it was a 2.12 (before my fiddling) and I normally wouldn't use anything over 2.11 but it just felt and sounded too good to not walk out with. The pickup honestly didn't feel too dissimilar to the 2.10 I was also thinking about buying after whittling it down from 5/6.

I had the first net with it last night after getting it knocked in and even though it was only machine balls boy does it go and it feels very natural to use despite the weight, the pick up is fantastic. I was definitely a bit slower to start with (machine set from 65mph to 70mph) but I got into it fairly quickly and stopped really noticing it at all after a while. I'm yet to test it on cutting and pulling much and I'm sure it might slow me down a bit but it's just such a joy to drive with I don't think I really care! Effortless to just put the ball away straight down the ground, and I found it actually encouraged me to play more correctly as I got such value for shots and it was harder to play more handsy shots that often just get me into trouble. I didn't just have someone feeding me half volleys either they did test me out quite a bit so that was encouraging. Obviously I won't know until I use it in a real game but provided someone isn't bowling 80 mph at me i think I'll be alright, spin will need to be tested as well at some stage.

Just a word on the service at Uzi: Asad and Uzi are brilliant, they really do look after you and go above and beyond to help you out with finding something you like. And a final word on the new range: what are you waiting for?! The three profiles have got something for everyone I reckon and this Poseidon profile is just a winner, there's so much wood in there the ball just flies and the pickup from the duckbill and the way its been balanced in general is very surprising. I'd love to see one made from a real low density cleft that could get my setup down to about 2.11 and not compromise on size. That would really be some bat.

Has anyone else had success/failure going up in weight?? I usually only hear negatives about people using a bat too heavy for them but I think this could really work for me.

Good review. I went up 4oz in weight and actually found it improved the pull shot. Now I use anything from 2lb6oz to 2lb 14oz. I find it makes no discernible difference for me.

Is this a slightly longer handle/shorter blade stick?

@Gurujames good to know someone's had some joy going heavier.

@Sivlar13 yes I believe so, not that it's noticeable, if it's supposed to improve balance/pickup it definitely does its job.

We can't keep up with the demand of this profile, as soon as the bats arrive, they are sold within next few  days so have ordered big quantity.
The other 2 profiles are selling well as well but our stock of Poseidon shape is very very low.  We are expecting to have more stock next week.

Little update on this, it's probably the best bat I've ever used and I've been fortunate enough to have a few good uns. We all know who makes these bats and he certainly does seem to know how to get the best out of the willow. I can see myself using this profile forever and just getting copies made hereafter. Whether they'll be as good as this though... cannot wait to get this out of the nets and into a game.

Thanks for the feedback, hard work is paying off. We have been working hard with the bat maker and selecting the best bats for our customers.
At present we have good stock of all 3 shapes we are offering this year. I welcome forum members to come and have a look at our stock of hand picked bats.
