You need to be careful you don't end up with just a odd job gardener with th no real wicket experience . I would have thought two wickets per year including materials would be at least £20-25k by a proper outfit.

Essex player Dan Lawrence's dad is the groundsman at Chingford CC. He works full-time and his arrangement includes him living at the ground. As far as I know, only two Essex League clubs have full-time groundsmen.

We have a full time groundsman at our place. Started off doing kitchens and bathrooms but went on all the courses etc etc and now he's doing a great job. Not only on the pitch, but in the club house as well.

Surprised by the many comments of "People these days won't volunteer". Big shame, I'd never imagine us paying for it. Ground and teas are volunteered at our place, don't see it changing.

Our ground work and teas are also done on a voluntary basis. 3 of us cover the ground between us, lucky to have some good equipment plus my own work tools which makes things relatively simple and fast and we are able to maintain to a decent standard. We have occasionally brought contractors in if theres an emergency - such as outfield mower breaking down on a Thursday night but this isn't cheap and I imagine would cost a fortune over the course of a season.

Same really, out groundsman volunteers... although we give him money out of kindness, if we turned around and said he wasn't getting any, he wouldnt care! I've done my fair share too and never had any money mentioned

About four of us do it on Wednesdays. Weather permitting. 6-8ish.
Same again Saturday mornings. Tea ladies, umpire & coaches all free as well.
Without volunteers there would be no club. Pay one & it's a slippery slope.
The social function of cricket in the local community is vastly understated.

your wicket only gets 2 hours preperation a week? I dont see how you can fully repair old wickets, cut new ones, roll them, seed them, water them etc etc in 2 hours, even if there is four of you

Lots of pre season work. And end of season work. All by ground team.
4 x 2 = 8. Repeated on Saturdays is 16 hrs a week.
Keep machines well maintained and be really organised with the routine of who does what.
It's the equivalent of 1 person doing over 2 hours 7 days a week. But I clearly did not articulate myself very well.
Also we get to have a beer afterwards
Watering on timer after games. Hope that helps.
