Brilliant game of cricket and a masterclass in the batting department by Root. What a player.

I am so sunburnt beyond belief right now.

The CBF bairstow selection committee was aiming both barrels at Hales only a month or two, and Morgan before that. It'll pass ;)

The case for Bairstow's selection is he is better than any of them.  Huge fluctuations in form seem to be accepted for the chosen few, when Bairstow, except when rested to death, is never out of form!

Maybe this is why he's so good?

Because he's only ever played cricket twice?

Excellent stuff by us, brilliant innings by yorkshires finest

Woakes looks injured, bairstow to bowl a bit next match?   :) just kidding.

Surprised Rashid didn't play this game as the oval is pretty flat with decent boundaries next match I think is Cardiff, bit smaller boundaries...so might miss out again.

I think, although he bowled really poorly and his figures were shocking, the Ball selection was shown to be the correct one on paper before the game.

England knew Woakes & Stokes were unfit, Morgan even said after the game he was surprised to get 7 overs from Stokes. If they were going to select both they needed backup in case one/both fell down.

I think the nail has been hit on the head there, the extra seamer was picked in case Woakes and Stokes could only bowl 5 each. Cardiff (although having smaller boundaries) tends to suit the spinners a little bit more doesn't it? I'd imagine Rashid will be back in against NZ.

Woakes is unsurprisingly out https://www.ecb.co.uk/news/405742

I suspect they'll just look at a seamer rather than an allrounder.

Are we presuming they'll look to bring in Finn or TRJ? Big blow losing Woakes.

If  Rashid  plays against NZ  England  still need 3 seamers   mark Wood  Plunkett plus who else will they risk Ball who went for 80 against Bangla and who will play if Rashid is left out and they go again with 4 quicks .

Is Finn the future, or has he run out of chances Ramprakash style?  Is it time for a brash youngster such as Currant, TRJ, Overton etc to step in and have an experience?

Do we think Tom Curran been replaced by TRJ in the pecking order or did they just not want to pull Curran out of what could have been a tight championship game the other day? Just seems a bit odd that Curran was the man called up for the West Indies tour.

Alec Stewart said that on commentary - they didn't want to pull Currant out of a championship match, and he had already bowled 30 overs.

That said, Stewie generously said he though TRJ had done really well, and that they were probably level-pegging.

Nice problem to have.

Very very odd decision for KW to win the toss and bat!
Grassy wicket with a 10:30 start and chance of rain - reckon all captains would bowl first given.

He's probably not use to winning the toss anyway.
