How to better play yorker and full length delivery
« on: March 19, 2017, 02:43:52 AM »

Hi, I have been getting bowled on yorkers and full-length deliveries.  I used to take leg stump guard, but now I have been taking middle stump - which made some difference but not enough. Looking for any good advice to avoid getting bowled :). Thanks!

Picking the line and length makes a huge difference. I would suggest standing two steps outside the crease in a more attacking fashion. Bowlers will be unlikely to think of yokers then.

Where Is your head
Where are your feet
Shoulders
Where are you trying to hit it?
Through the line or across it?

Do you go forwards or just stand and trying and smash it as it's full etc ?

Majority of amateurs get out to yorkas as they don't move into the ball and then swing across the line.. if you go towards it and play straight you'll miss the ball rarely

Even backlist, you'll only be done with a high backlift if for your level it's extreme pace.. otherwise it's just slow reactions

Never had a problem playing Yorkers
Also not one for standing outside the crease and then stepping back  in it although that would work as the bowler is  targeting your toes.
Prefer to watch the ball at all times with head still  from the time the bowler runs in upto the time the bowler lets the ball go as by keeping your eyes on the the ball in  the bowlers hand you pick up the length quicker which will alow you to play the yorker as the natural reaction is to  bring your bat down quicker  leading to you playing the  yorker and full ball without difficulty providing you bring your bat down straight.

Watch the ball, people who tend to lose site of yorkers forget to do this, losing sight of it. When you have to guess where the ball is you're likely to be in trouble

This usually happens early in my innings when I am trying to play straight and in defensive mode.

In that case then get yourself in front of a mirror with your pads on bring the bat down and ensure your top hand brushes the top of your pad.

It happened to me last year. It turned out I was very slow to cover the line of the ball. Make sure you are not going to backfoot a lot.

I've found REALLY watching the ball out of the hand has done wonders for me this winter/Spring
I know it sounds obvious but I'd got into bad habits; generally just looking at the bowler & picking ball up off deck.
It was something KP said on comms about how very closely he focuses on the ball.
More time, easier to pick up length & more out middle - basic but seems to help
