Is this a fake?
« on: March 20, 2017, 09:33:53 PM »

Advice please guys.
For some reason, a pal of mine has purchased this from eBay:
http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/322436636665?_mwBanner=1

Could you knowledgable chaps tell me if it's legit please.
TIA

Looks like both the grains and bat are fake, to me.

Believe it to be fake, the stickers look all wrong, the fonts different and looks slightly thicker, and the front sticker is one piece when the real article is in two bits, the main sticker then the grade sticker where as this is only one all together

Sad to say it definitely doesn't look the right shape... Also, not sure the grains match front and back? Hard to tell from the photos but the heartwood on the inside edge doesn't seem to be present on the back of the bat. Signs aren't good.

No excuse for not getting real stickers on your fake Newbery these days!

Potentially just a trial blazer ahead of its time?
Aren't they all going to be "stickered up" shortly
(I know that the top end will still be UK made I'm being mischievous)

Already, I think.

So philosophical question???

If I buy a good quality english willow Indian made bat and add legitimate Newbery stickers and a hammer edge scuff is it still a fake and why?

For the same reason if you add a crocodile logo onto a polo-shirt, it still doesn't make iti Lacoste.

Sticking a badge on something without the brands authorisation makes it a fake.

Newbery, whilst they don't make their own bats (and haven't for about 10 years), still design and commission the manufacture of cricket bats. They also spend decent sums on their brand, whether that's the marketing or ensuring the integrity of their products. Whilst most of us don't like the outsourcing to India approach, they do have a right to ensure that their logo (which has signficant value and would therefore add value to a plaint cricket bat) is only sold on products they're happy with.
