How should I clean my gloves?
« on: March 22, 2017, 03:08:43 AM »

If any of you guys are like me, you will understand my pain! I have extra active sweat glands and even a new glove doesn't last me more than a few matches before it becomes all sticky and nasty! I have tried using inners but they make me feel the handle being too thick. I have switched to pittards since they provide better aeration but still, is there any way I can clean them myself?

What do you mean by  sticky and nasty?
are you referring to inside the glove or the palms that are in contact on the handle?

If inside i would be questioning whether your gloves are drying out properly after use.

After every session, I keep them out long enough to dry but just after a few uses, the salts start accumulating there in it. I sweat buckets! To give you an idea, when I look down while batting, sweat continuously drop down from my helmet! I am quite sure that I must be sweating more than Rahul Dravidian used to while batting.

I sweat quite a lot as well but never had that sort of problem.
We did have one guy at a former club who use to spray deodorant down them. Was like a special no sweat stuff and seemed to keep his gloves in tact

My wife suffered from sweaty hands as well, you can get that deodorant in a roll on or spray, worked quite well but not sure the affect it would have on gloves.

A few weeks ago I put my crappest pair through the wash and they came out as supple as they were when they went in and smelling lovely. Therefore I washed all my gloves and the all came out perfect.
Cold wash and add a bit of 'softener' (you may need to ask the missus what that is)

How about inners and a thinner handle?

Spraying antprespirant onto your hands before putting the gloves might work. I have put talcum powder inside the gloves to absorb excess moisture, worked to a certain extent. To soften out the brittle glove palm, use a shoe brush and the minutest amount of leather conditioner. I find that inner gloves in conjunction with all these help the most.

Find that putting then in the washing machine works well for cleaning  but they can be a bit stiff after drying.

I used a set of pittards gloves as my night training gloves this season just gone.
Gets pretty sticky in Brisbane, indoors, no air con so my gloves went quite manky as well.
Cricket stuff is pretty rugged, so I put mine into the washing machine.
That got them doing pretty well to get me through the season.

I was only using them for training, so didn't have a problem from my game gloves.

Try that to get them back of being 'fresh-ish' then start using the anti-persperiant.

Good luck.

I put my H4L customs through the washing machine and they came out lovely (and no longer smelling manky!)
