Oh dear... advice please
« on: March 24, 2017, 01:12:39 PM »

Ok, I noticed a bit of a funny sound on some shots that were a bit outside edgey during a net the other week, checked after the net and noticed some cracking along the edge. Removed the scuff today and the crack runs pretty much the entire length of the hitting area :( Suspect it's delaminating, this is one of my favourite bats so quite keen for it not to be the end! What's the verdict CBF, any advice on how fixable or terminal this is? Got to decide whether to tackle it myself, get it done professionally somewhere or possibly send it back to the maker for a fix and new copy.

Fix it yourself.

Pour this in. Its so thin, it siphons down thru the gap without prying it open.

Wrap it close in parcel tape or something like it.

Should be a fix

I would use PVA glue and bind.

Easy fix, may look worse than it actually is. Inject pva in and tape.

How deep are the cracks? Do they go quite far into the face of the bat?

Hard to tell tbh, from feel about 15mm but might be deeper in some spots. Main reason I'm concerned is that it's over such a long area?

If it's not too far into the face then, then get a Stanley knife and start opening up the cracks fill with glue and then clamp down with sellotape or parcel tape or twine and should be fine

Start of a slow death, but can easily get a lot more use out of it with a good gluing. I have one that looks like this and still going strong 2 seasons later as my main bat. Just a case of getting the glue in as deep as possible and clamping.

Superglue should not be used for a repair like this, it cures way too brittle, the delamination will just open up again after a few hits.

@edge  Open the crack out with a long thin implement like a knife or flathead screwdriver, get PVA glue in there, using printers ink needles if necessary to go as deep as possible, wrap tightly in stretchy parcel tape. Remove tape the next day and sand to a neat finish.

Easy repair... open the crack and inject some glue... then clamp it using parcel tape fro 24 hours finally sand it..

Job done !

im not going to make any suggestion on repairs when there are experts on the forum because I superglue all cracks which apparently is the devils own stuff

but as far as ''should I attempt the repair myself' will I would say yes because it's great getting some sandpaper out, glues, clamps, parcel tape and the lark with a pint outside( I have a balcony) or in the garage/living room(!)

but if you want a proper job give it to tom line. The big fella Cam also does a good job

Superglue has its uses, but mostly to seal a very small surface crack, something like this which will inevitably be required to flex due to ongoing impact against a ball is better served by PVA.
