Total waste of time batting in club nets, outdoors is as bad as winter indoor

You'd be better doing throw downs or range hitting or something.

After the winter we've had, there's no way I'm missing any cricket games, even if it means a 400 mile drive to play for my sons team.
Play in your 5ths, keep your head up and enjoy the moment

Totally agree with what's been said.
I've seen of the guys look world beaters in the nexts and then go out in the middle and not been able to buy a run.

Interesting different views on indoor nets. I'm personally now a dedicated indoor net monkey

but I totally get those who say it's no substitute for outdoor games, and those that don't bother indoors because it's no relation in April to a grass wicket

I think indoors can help with fitness and technique, but yes...there's no substitute for getting out on a pitch and playing at whatever level

Nets are great as long as you are actually working on something.

If you're just going in there for a whack unless you are horribly out of form and just want to feel the ball out the middle there is little benefit.

Yes absolutely. don't know about anyone else but all technical stuff and trying to improve shots is done indoors, once the season starts trying to work on technical stuff I don't think works

you should be trying just to score runs really and keep it simple

With reference to nets, a certain forum member and now teammate has opened my eyes to that one!
If you are considered one of the better batsman then some of the younger bowlers tend to treat it like a battle and take your head off or bowl as fast as possible. And because of this most of the batsmen get drawn into playing nothing like they would in a match as their only goal is to smash the bowler, which often ends in shots they would never play in a match!! So in my case, I am beginning to see that there is minimal advantage in our nets.
However, if the nets were more structured and had possibly 1 net of seam/swing on proper length and another of spin, then you could use one or both lanes to work on specific skills or specific balls! So nets do have their uses in the right conditions.

But I have found working on technique on a 1-2-1 basis far more useful. You need someone who will be honest with you and knows what you are doing wrong and what you need to work on. But has done me more good than trying to smash balls in our normal Club net!

I think that practicing certain balls is alos good again bowling machines - So if you wanted to practice playing yorkers or balls on off stump which swing away, then 2 minutes of setting the bowling machine up and you have an endless supply of practice! Plus as Carlos stated, this would also help for fitness.
But playing against a bowling machine will only help you grove your technique and work on certain aspects and has no reflection of conditions or some of the balls you may get in early May!! But also a good knock can come from nowhere, even if you don't feel great in the nets!!

i always use nets as a technique session as I don't worry about what the bowler is sending down just how im seeing it and where my positioning is when I play the ball, if they start sending too many short ones down ( I get a few on match days so don't mind a couple) I will ask them why they are doing and to bowl properly or go to another net while im in

same is true of bowling, so many batsmen use there feet to me in nets and try to slog or switch hit but would not do it in a game so I look at it the way of was that the ball I wanted to bowl and did it pitch where I wanted it to if so I don't care if the batsmen breaks the net smashing it

The problem with club nets is the lack of quality bowling
I've netted with clubs for over 40yrs now, and unless you have a wealth of class line and length bowling at your club, then what can you get out of batting in club nets?
Come match day, when the oppos bowling full and straight, the wickets green, they are using a cheap and nasty ball that swings round corners or wobbles mid flight, and the keepers chirping in your ear how crap you are, , that 10 mins of facing a few that are actually bowled at you, in club nets, is not really gonna do a lot to help.

I know a lot don't like midweek t20 cricket, but I've found that's a much better 'practice' for cricket than club nets.

Each to their own tho
I know some on here have lovely structured clubs with excellent training facilities etc and coaches

That's the second time I've had the worst net of my life in the last 2 days.
Contemplating dropping out this Saturday and letting someone who will actually play in the 5th XI regularly my spot. I feel that would do more for the team and the club than if I played.

I think this is the first time I've felt like giving up before even playing a league game :-[  :(

(No Swearing Please) to that. Play every game you can.

I agree, especially if your batting second with the sun low and getting darker, really makes you focus hard on the ball

In our practice last night I made sure it had 3 bowlers who bowled 3 balls each, my partner and I would then run a 3. Found this worked well as I faced 3 consistent balls in a more match like situation and the bowler likewise had a more match like situation. My only complain was I wanted to bat longer! Anyways it's our first game tomorrow, I'm on tea duty too. Fingers crossed they both go well

YES!!!!  The cat is out of the bag! First game today against Whitely Village (which is a retirement complex, so we may do well!)

After a self-inflicted crap season last year, I'm raring for one last tilt at the windmills!

Have the longest away trip of the season today, Chalfont St Giles to Harpsden. My car broke down before reaching the M40, which is less than ten minutes from home, and I came within 50 yards of nursing it home. Hopefully not an omen of the season to come!

It wasn't an omen. Win by seven wickets, 170ao vs 173/3 with one of the lads getting his maiden 1s ton. 0/24 from six for me, didn't turn much. Car not good, head gasket gone so not going anywhere.
