Opinions wanted! B3 cracking
« on: May 01, 2017, 04:27:21 PM »

As I mentioned earlier in the 'Your Kit 2017' thread, I fear my beloved B3 bespoke is breaking quite fast.

The first two pics are how it looked on the day I got it midway through last season:

These were taken just now after removing the scuff sheet and edge tape.

This is the toe, showing cracks up both edges and one about an inch in from my inside edge (right handed).

The toe showing the three cracks going up the face.

Outside edge.

Trying to show the crack about an inch in from the edge, going up the grain then moving between grains up the face.

Trying to show the edge crack (about 1cm in from the edge) weaving a little but always about 1cm from the edge.

Split about 1-2mm onto the edge under where the tape was.

I am aware that as a G1 bat it is built for performance rather than longevity, but should all these be easily repairable? Or are some of them nothing to worry about?

I will be gluing them shortly, and will put on a helicopter scuff sheet and some pics showing how it ends up.

Glue, clamp and if it gets worse you could dowel? Have you dropped the good doctor a note at b3 as I'm sure they'd sort it for you.

I would put a toe plate in that should sort it

They don't look a problem to me. The cracks are fairly minor and easily repaired. The fact that the toe cracks don't go front to back is a bonus.

As above they don't look too bad and appear a lot worse than they really are, open them up a little with a Stanley Knife small screw driver or the like, fill with some PVA wood glue and clamp down, leave overnight and then give it a sand to clean up and should be good to go.

You might want to put a toe guard, shoe goo or layer of wood glue on the toe to help protect them

My concern is that they are about a cm squared on each toe from the face to the edge of the bat, but its a relief that most don't think they are serious. I will sand it down, get some glue into the cracks and hopefully have some progress tomorrow

I would glue then sand if I was you. Otherwise you will end up sanding it twice.

Update: I decided to take most of the stickers off - some came off with the scuff sheet, so I decided to keep the B3 on the toe but remove the rest. Discovered that it is cracking from the bottom of the splice down both sides of the spine. Kind of wish I hadn't taken the sticker off now.

You should always contact the manufacturer. B3 have amazing customer service. Email/ call them immediately.

On the pictures you've shown I wouldn't expect b3 to do anything , I got similar to this when knocking mine in. I just glued and taped and it's been fine for two seasons.

Can't see the splice cracks yet but that will be a call to b3 no doubt

I will get a pic of splice cracks up. It's very annoying as all my bats seem to go there, maybe as I favour light bats that are big profiled so dry, but I'm not a big one for smacking it down hard on the track in my stance.

As promised:

I'm about to email the Doctor, but I suspect it will be nothing more than glue and tape until it goes completely.

Regarding the toe and edge cracks I'd suggest some batting lessons and less hitting edges and concentrate on middling the ball  ;) :D

Rest looks fine, splice crack looks terminal.

That's probably why all my bats look like that........ lack of talent.

Is it wrong I don't worry about them and just carry on using them?
Imo it's a piece of wood used to smash a hard ball. Small signs and cracks don't bother me.

The ones on the splice need looking at though.
