Anyone can correct me and add to this...

Melbourne made bats have a A for A grade willow on the back of the bat near the rh side of toe  and one stamp on the shoulder to indicate year of production.  2016 was T, so it should have a U the 2017 season unless actually made last year.

Indian made bats have a stamp on each shoulder. Not sure if the Letter indicates the same year.

A is not for the grade of willow, it's the confirmation stamp that bat can be used in all levels of cricket refering to MCC law 6.

Spot on skip , the A stamp explanation is correct , the T stamp is correct as 2017 & yes U indicates 2018 bats.
An SS in the shoulder stands for a substandard blade , & as for a stu personally made , he can tell his own craftmanship from other custom made examples , secret telltale marks that only he knows.

What are peoples experiences with ordering a bat from Aus? Ok you may not have to pay the Aus tax but what about the postage and import duty?

I purchased a XP70 from Kingsgrove in OZ.  The customer Service was great.  The bats on the webpage were advertised as 2.8 to 2.9, on the order form I asked for the lightest bat with the best straight grain.  Bat came in at 2.7 and looks great.  The bat arrived in the UK after two days, then took a week in customs, plus a £58 import TAX.

I have a doubt the shoulder stamps mean something else. Of the 3 bats below, the first 2 are recent purchases from Australia and the third, slightly older and from India. So I doubt "U" means 2018 bats.

And perhaps someone can tell what "TU" stands for.

Correct , bats made which were surplus to 2017 shop orders , held over for next season , & if requested were stickered up as either 2017 or 2018 range.

Xp80 30mm edge 18mm toe & as most of you know a very pronounced spine & sweet spot , the velocity xl has a smaller 25mm edge but a larger 21mm toe & still an 80mm spine ,  the sweet spot is different being a lot larger & longer.

Thanks for these specs. Excellent to have you clarify this.

Yep I was mucking around with side on shots and noticed these differences. I had concerns about the toe last year when I knocked a XP80. Looks like we reset the doomsday clock for big bats for another 12 months.

Out of interest @Aussiecollector do you have any details on the GN Signature? Is it the successor to the 50 Plus?

I have been told that the GN Signature will be in compliance with the new MCC regulations. Same color scheme as the 50+, but smaller in size.

It does make me laugh to hear people worrying about an 18mm toe. Balls haven't got any harder, and yet bats from years back had slim toes (15mm in some cases) and didn't suffer particularly. As long as the toe is shaped properly, it's really not something to worry about overly.
