Fingers
« on: June 02, 2017, 08:53:23 PM »

Looking for a tip.

I've taken a big hit on my toby tall. Its swollen and a tad out of shape (pretty confident its not broken or seriously knackered). Tomorrow will be three weeks since i initially damaged it. Im looking for a way to tape it / protect it tomorrow. Anyone got any good taping or padding tricks they can share?

The difficulty you have is that you can't strap it too much otherwise it won't fit in your inner. I've tried with Elastoplast after I broke my index finger and it just didn't fit in my glove! You could try something like microporous tape which is somewhat thinner, unfortunately I don't find taping does anything when it comes to cushioning.

Sounds like a compression fracture to me, will be fine after a few weeks. All the best for tomorrow lad.

One of our keepers used to wrap the end joints at the top of his fingers with insulation tape.
This was to help keep them from hyperextending if he did take a ball to the finger tip. I have no idea if this was just a placebo or not, but he swore by it...

I had to google toby tall. Middle finger?

I did my ring finger last year. Best thing I found was firstly some padded tape, not a lot, just one wrap around the swollen area. Then strips along the length of your finger from the middle of the back of the finger, over the nail and stopping at the bottom of the front (palm side) of the finger. Keep your finger slightly bent and the tape stretched. Do this three times at slightly different angles then wrap some more tape from bottom to top (perpendicular to the strips).

There shouldn't be too much tape so you can still get it in the gloves and it should stop you bending it backwards again. I tried not to have it too tight but tight enough to feel supportive.

Its a nursery rhyme, i believe.

Cheers for the advice, i get what you mean. I might try that. In the end i got out a new pair of inners with fresh padding and just concentrated on catching it. Got through it. Still swollen and out shape but got full movement so i should be ok.

In the past I have used a strapping tape that volleyball players use its a bit more padded than normal tape but does the job wrapped around a couple of times

Have seen people use foam taped to fingers before to protect and can always tape two fingers on the outside of the gloves to save to give the distorted digit some support

The struggle of wicketkeeping hands! Personally I always found the padded tape too bulky as has been mentioned. The fabric or zinc oxide tape is thinner and slightly stiffer which is ideal, the very end joint is difficult to tape and limits dexterity somewhat, the same with pinkie taping. However the main joint if taped well is very protective yet offers a good feel for the ball. Try out a couple of different tapes, how many wraps you like etc and you will very quickly work out why works for you

Agreed, and for someone who is a no11 outdoor, he is a pretty decent indoor batsman!

Also an even better indoor keeper!
