Should Ireland be granted test status...
« on: February 01, 2010, 01:07:58 PM »

What do you think?
In my opinion if Ireland becomes a test team, teams like Australia and India will be forced to be play tests against them which is a waste of time which will mean fewers tests between strong teams.

In short, probably not yet. However I think they should play more ODI's against the Test Nations.

Ireland should only play test match cricket if there is a two tier test division! But for the time being a put no.

Not ready or anywhere near good enough but perhaps in the future and possibly if they split into two divisions perhaps that may work however i cant see two divisions any time soon.

Yeah i have to agree with choppy and watson . . . .if they introduced a two tier system then im all for it but I dont see the point of having another sub standard team like Bangladesh/Zimbabwe in the test playing arena.

Would be good to see more international teams though as I think it adds a little more interest to the game! Love seeing new teams at the World Cup like Namibia, UAE etc.

By the way are they getting Test status or is this just hypothetical?

i think these budding teams like Ireland, Kenya, Afghanistan, they should be sent on tour world over by ICC to play full domestic tours in test playing nations. I remember Bangladesh playing in Pakistan's premier domestic one day tournament and they ha d a hard time then. They learnt a lot and did win some games in the end of the tour. So imagine Kenya having first class games in bouncy Aussie pitches orr Afghanistan playing in wet English conditions for a couple of months. Thats the first step in their development. The associate first class event should also be played at regular intervals to get more team playing.

They would benefit from it and could play part of a second division of nations alongside Zimbabwe, Bangladesh and others.

Mike, I wouldn't give Ireland a hope in hell vs Zimbabwe, let alone Bangladesh.
