CA 12000 edges cracking while knocking in
« on: June 23, 2017, 08:24:51 PM »

While knocking in the edges, some cracks have formed on the inside edge. I tried to use super glue to fix them, but when continuing to knock the edges in it got worse and worse. Any tips on how to fix this? The inside edge still needs some knocking in. I've attached the pictures below.

I'd be sending that straight back - however I'd also question your oiling and knocking, as it seems strange for it to have cracked underneath the edge of your hitting on top of the 45 degree angle on the edge as you should be.

I'm sure there was another thread about how excellent CA bats are recently... :-[

i think this happened cuz you didn't ease your way into it (maybe "rolling" the edge prior to knocking it would have been better?). that said.. what will happen now, is that crack will spread a bit more along the length of the blade. this is NOT a big deal.. i'd say keep knocking it, let the cracks spread a bit, and THEN shove some glue in there and clamp it (using tape) overnight.

Yes, I both oiled it and rolled the edges with the handle of the mallet. I've knocked in a CA 3000 before, and the edges didnt crack like this, however maybe this wood is softer and i went too hard too quickly? Luckily the cracks are on the inside edge also.

Also, what do you mean by taping it overnight?

It wouldn't jump to any conclusion about bat Quality yet. You need to question the knocking in technique.

What kind of mallet were you using? How hard were you hitting the edges? What angle were you holding it?

It means apply PVA glue into the crack and use packing tape to hold the two sides together while it sets overnight.

Sarcasm doesn't translate well on the internet, does it...
My comment was, for those who were wondering, tongue in cheek

The mallet I was using was just like that, I was hitting the edges at a 30-45 degree angle, rouding them first with the handle then progressively getting harder. Unfortunately for me, I think i progressed too fast and that led to the cracks.

Small amount of glue can fix it. Happened to few of my bats and it is a natural product so no one knows how durable it can be.

Did the glue stop the crack from spreading or did the crack spread regardless?

Your first post to the forum is about a cracked edge of a CA, you are off to a good start. :D

I have similar cracks on one of my bats. I glued with super glue, sanded it, and used the bat. :) No issues really. After a while, I applied a 2x4 piece of  anti-scuff sheet to one of the edges to just keep the crack in check.

Edges and toes can be tricky. I made a big fuss about certain (popular) bat's toe cracking while knocking recently. :D

Send it back ?
How is this the manufacturers' fault ?
