Don't understand why people rush to blame the manufacturer or the person knocking in when something like this happens. Why can't it be just bad luck combined with the fact that its just wood and can split when hit?

No amount of glue will prevent further splitting when a ball hits it if its left unprotected. Only option in my view is to stop knocking in and cover it with a 3-4 layers of edge tape and forget about it.

I noticed your bat has ca burnt in stampings . They haven't been used on ca bats for about 2 seasons ( maybe more like a year and half , give or take)... point is - this bat is old stock . A bit more oil than normal ( who knows where its been sitting all this time /how much it has dried out ) , boning the edges , sanding the edges slightly,  then gentle knocking for an hour or more( before commencing 'normal' knocking in )  would have been the way i approached it .

Also , recently , i was preparing a stanford and had a few small cracks develop on the edge just above the sf burnt in stamping . I think the stamping , if deep enough/ close enough to the actual edge , creates a bit of a weak point on the edge above the stamp . I applied some pva , sanded the crack /rounded it off , and it was fine .

My argument would be that if the bat cannot withstand the knocking in process then it was probably drier than a nuns chuff and no amount of oil will change that because all oil does is seal in existing moisture - if there is no existing moisture to seal in then oil is useless. Furthermore if the bat is breaking during the knocking in process it needs to be replaced because there is no longevity and the bat will not last past a few weeks in all probability. I've had one bat break during knocking and it was replaced straight away no questions asked.

And you know the knocking in techniques used were correct? Do you know if he hit the edges full force with a mallet? Does this not get taken into account?

Just started knocking in a new MRF Genius Grand edition. Have oiled lightly with two coats. But I just noticed a hairline crack on the blade that seems to go diagonally through the toe.
Do you think this is a problem and I should stop knocking in? I am using a wooden mallet and started pretty gently, but I heard that MRF bats can be very soft when new...

It doesn't seem to be too bad of a crack, if it went all the way through the toe then you'd be in trouble. I would put some super glue on it and give it a light sand and it should be fine. Paul has done a good video about a bat with a similar problem - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-AvpPmsdkg

Thanks. Yes the video was helpful. Don't think I can get superglue into the crack as it hasn't opened up at all. But I'll keep an eye on it.

I would still put a light layer of superglue on it and give it a sand. If it's left and it's used you risk the crack getting more severe.

An old thread.

Use regular glue (instead of super glue), sand, and gently knock. No need to worry or panic. Make sure you enjoy the bat and get lots of use out of it.
