Thumb protection
« on: July 23, 2017, 06:46:16 AM »

I bought a pair of SS Gladiator gloves and am really happy with everything except the thumb protection.  It's got the usual little rubber thimble thing for your thumb to fit into, but with just the tiniest little bit of hard foam in it.  Not very comfortable and certainly doesn't feel very protective.

The more expensive gloves I've tried always seem to have really nice feeling foam/gel/whatever on the end of the thumb.  Anyone know exactly what they use?

I purchased two sets of M&H gloves from a Forum member, he had removed the protectors from the thumbs, the gloves feel great and much more comfortable than regular gloves. I have used them ever since, never been hit on the gloves while using them.

Swop  thimble thumb protectors  between gloves for better protection

Ive swapped out crappy foam in many of my gloves . I use memory foam . Feels great . You can buy it cheap , by the roll , on flea bay and other similar sites . Comes in handy for other things too . Well worth it.

Thanks. I thought memory foam might be the best but I could only find it in large sizes on eBay. Don't want to have to buy a mattress to cut out a thumb-sized piece.  :(

I'll do some more hunting...

Never been a fan of this brand. Nevertheless, the rubber thimble thing
Is for your own protection. Do not remove that under any circumstances,
The thumb protection is what will protect your thumb against the ball, but
This rubber thimble is to protect your thumb from the thumb protector itself,
After it has impacted with the ball. Companies do not recommend to do your
Own experimentation, as it is risky. Also, be aware all top brands in the world
Use this same thing. As a matter of fact many brands are made by this company
Itself. They would not not use anything inferior in there product and use goods
Ones on the brands they make.

It doesn't sound like he intends on removing the thimble , only replacing the tiny sponge inside /at the tip of the thimble . If thats the case ,  that sponge is such low density foam it has next to no protection value and is only there to add comfort/cushioning for your thumb inside the thimble .
Re the thimble , yes it is there to aid in protecting the thumb from the thumb protection part being jammed up against the  thumb, but primarily the thimble is there to protect against front on impact to the point of the thumb .

Correct. I just plan to replace or add some extra foam as what it came with is almost non-existent.

Since you seem to have made up your mind.
Shall advice an easy option, buy a pencil eraser
Cut that to fit in tight enough.
You will be well sorted .......

Can assure you it works. I wore one directly on the end of my thumb (Late on a pull shot) around 1.5months this year. The end of my thumb/nail is completely fine with no bruising at all, unfortunately where the impact jammed my thumb I seem to have done some serious damage to the joint between my thumb and hand. Month on and I can now hold things but any impact is still causing serious pain.

I would not recommend removing the thimble at all.

@Hactar .... i noticed a lack of any rolls of memory foam on ebay too just now (not sure what happened to them). But you could always buy some memory foam shoe insoles (the white coloured ones /chinese cheapies , between $1-$4 ) . If you cut a coin size circle or two layered together etc , I'm sure that would work well (i might just experiment with that myself ! ).

Yep , i copped one on the point of my thumb a while back - same way too !... late on a pull shot. When it happens you feel glad you've persisted with the 'nuisance feeling' the thimble can sometimes give .

Good idea. I'll report back if it works well!
