At that price I'd imagine 1 or 2

Grade of Willow?

GN don't buy willow from a merchant so aren't bound by the simplified grading system presented to the public, a system used by fewer and fewer brands as it is incredibly subjective.

GN haven't stated grades of bats for a few years now. The official answer to your questions is the SWB7 Nemesis 600 is a 600 grade bat. The grade of a 2017 Powerbow 5 Star is 5 star, etc.

I completely get that it is as clear as mud. What i often find when a customer comes in and says 'i'm after a grade one bat' is that they don't have any answer at all when i say 'what's your definition of a G1?'

It's been discussed at length in the past, the simple grading system of 1-5 is pretty pointless. There is more than one willow merchant, each merchant having their own grading criteria, with no industry wide regulation/monitoring, there are at least 14 different grades available to buy from merchants as far as i'm aware, how that translates into grades 1,2,3,4 and 5 is anyones guess. Some brands/batmakers regrade as they see fit when they take delivery of the clefts. Some brands/batmakers fell their own willow. Some clefts are now graded on size/density, see the reasonably ugly Warner bats for $1000 AUS for further details.

There are also things like G1+ and 'Pro' grade to consider too.

Most of the major manufacturers no longer explicitly state the 'bat x is grade x'

They grade in Aus and 500 600 and 700 models are usually G3 I believe. Given the relative pricing I think G3 seems realistic compared to "conventional" grading for whatever that is worth. A bat is a bat and if it feel good and goes then happy days :)

I think the industry in Aus still centres around the traditional grading of 1-5. The only bat in the UK range that states what grade it is, is an Australian model, the bog standard (small) Warner 31 model for about £175, it says 'grade 3' on the stickers.

I appreciate it's impossible to correlate everyone's expectations into a simple grading system. Can't we just have a Freemason style secret grading system? So when people come into the store we can have a secret handshake then say I'd like a:

Low density - Can have between 1 and 100 grains, this is a science experiment not a grade.
G1+ - Blemish free, perfect white Willow. Grains are too subjective.
G1 - A small blemish on the face, not in the playing area. Or a perfect face with heartwood
G2 - A few blemishes, perhaps some graping. Heartwood almost guaranteed.
G3 - An ugly face, or butterfly.
G4 - You're asked to leave the store - "Sports direct is over there" *Points towards the door*
G5 - "B&Q sell MDF, I'd try them." *Speak slowly, it may help*

Well said. And if you asked for players grade willow would the answer be 'that's £200 extra Sir'.

Really good to have a chat to @thebigginge today at Lords. We talked through the new range.
We are both excited by the new power bow. Alex also explained the reason behind some of the new colour schemes... which is for one range to match blue school uniforms!
Not many bats left at the Lords stands sadly!

Does the new scoop sounds as tinny live as it does on TV, hard to tell how it went as Braithwaite scored nothing in this test but both the scoop and dynadrive I had a few years back sounded awful when used, played ok but I must admit seems a gimmick as certainly in my experience does nothing for performance and sound wise not great.

Be interested to see there catalogue is its available like the GM one is

That GN took a while to open up. But once it did, was a lovely bat.
I to never noticed any strange sound with it.

Me neither. The Dynadrive I had took a little while to get going, but always sounded normal
