This is all a bit of a marriage of convenience I think.
I doubt Rashid will be in the test team come the Ashes.

Stuart Law confirmed as new Middlesex head coach, starting in January. Doing all formats so Daniel Vettori no longer t20 coach (thank goodness, somehow Middlesex got worse with him). Law is doing the Windies tours before the turn of the year, but looking forward to seeing him take on a young but talented squad with a big point to prove after two frankly abysmal years.

But Kent have got a core of lads who have come through the age group system and have been given their chances. Matt Henry has been a revelation this season, along with the signing of Podmore.

Slightly off topic but clubs a number of divisions away from playing premier division cricket signing top club players for big money is one that does need to be addressed. The whole purpose of creating these was for the best players outside of the first class game to be playing against each other. Plus, you see time and time again clubs who come into some money, bring in a load of paid players do get them up the leagues but do nothing to improve their facilities. Suddenly the money dries up, the players find a pay day elsewhere and the club is left with a run down and struggling to get sides out

Could be I recall incorrectly, but didn't there use to be a limit on the number of players could sign when their current counties did not want them to go?

Earlier than that even - I don't recall exactly but I reckon it was probably 96 when it was relaxed. It used to be that counties could only sign two category A players in a three year period - Category A being anyone in contract whose county had offered them a new deal.

Warks have brought in Norwell & Miles, as well as Sibley, Hose, Rhodes & Stone recently
Hants have brought in Northeast, Abbott, Donald & Barker
Surrey have brought in plenty, as have Notts, and Lancs brought in Jennings & Onions last year.

Just seems to be becoming a bigger divide between the haves and the have nots, is all, with no compensation for the clubs who have developed players.

Why develop your own players if you have enough money to lure in the best players from another county?

I wonder how many home grown players the Test ground clubs will field int heir strongest sides next year (I'm including England players because recruiting to cover is more acceptable, and assuming only those players confirmed, so no overseas apart from Jeet Patel. So, accepting that moves before 18, even from overseas, and players returning to their home counties are "home grown", we have:

Yorkshire: Lyth, Brook, Root, Ballance, Kohler-Cadmore , Bairstow, Bresnan, Rashid, Fisher, Patterson, Coad (11)
Surrey: Stoneman, Burns, Borthwick, Roy, Pope, Foakes, Clark, S Curran, T Curran, Morkel, Virdi (6)
Hampshire: Wetherley, Soames, Vince, Northeast, Roussow, Alsop, Dawson, Abbott, Holland, Berg, Edwards (5)
Notts: Slater, Mullaney, Duckett, Clarke, Wessells, Patel, Moores, Chappell, Broad, Ball, Gurney (4)
Warwickshire: Sibley, Rhodes, Bell, Hain, Hose, Ambrose, J Patel, Norwell, Stone, Brookes, Hannon-Dalby (3)

And in D2:

Lancashire: Hameed, Davies, Jennings, Livingstone, Vilas, Bohannon, Buttler, Bailey, Gleeson, Onions, Parkinson (7)
Middlesex: Robson, Gubbins, Eskinazi, Malan, Holden, White, Harris, Roland-Jones, Rayner, Finn, Fuller (7)

Some numbers are deceptive - Surrey have some good home grown talent just outside their very best XI, and Middlesex have a lot of seamers (Helm, Bamber, Andersson) who are home grown and just outside the first XI. Others are really worrying.

The main deception is that Yorkshire is a far larger county than the rest. A quick google suggest that the population is around 5 times that of Surrey and close to 10 times the size of Warwickshire.
