A little research
« on: November 22, 2017, 12:22:13 PM »

Afternoon all! Could anyone with a GN Kaboom let me know how much their example(s) weighs, thanks a lot. And how many grips are included in that weight.

Cheers, Justin

You're getting your money's worth out of those edges.

Please don't start this "debate" again! :-[

For the record, as nice as the old (or are they current again, with the new bat regulations?) off the shelf Kabooms were, I think Justin was referring to the 50mm edge monsters

50mm monsters

More a  presumption than anything. I know I shouldn't, as presumption is the mother of all cock ups, but the rational behind my thinking was:
  • While the older Kabooms are nice sticks, the shape isn't anything that special. They were, for all intensive purposes, "normal bats" with Kaboom stickers. There are several bats that are a similar/the same shape that are readily available
  • With the new bat regulations, if bigger brands start to produce only compliant bats you wont see many/any new ones made by Gray Nicolls, so it makes sense to find out as much as you can about them now before they get destroyed through use (apparently some people buy a bat then use it to hit balls?)
  • The 50mm edge monsters are still in fashion (on the forum, at least) so there is a higher chance of getting a reply now than in, lets say, 3 months time, when the new thing comes along and they're all sold on eBay for a loss

Sorry chaps, I probably should have been clearer from the start! I'm trying to replicate a Kaboom in the workshop. I think I've got reasonably close to the shape but it's currently weighing in at about 3lb.

The thing is, my effort has 38mm edges, spine about 50ish. So considerably smaller than Chad's monster, yet still noticeably heavier.

It really demonstrates how much drier the wood that GN use is, compared to my homemade. I have to get more moisture out, probably another 5-6 ounces.

These two are 2017 models of Kaboom and Velocity Players choice. Both are about 2.9.
