These two are 2017 models of Kaboom and Velocity Players choice. Both are about 2.9.

What’s the edge size on those two mate?

Has anyone come up with a way of measuring the moisture levels needed in the clefts to create these monsters?

I've got a monster handled cleft on the go, it's currently at nearly 4lb, there's no way I can remove a pound and a half of wood from it, to get a bat the size of these monsters.

Soooo, it's gone in the airing cupboard, and I'm gonna monitor the dead weight, and see if I can dry it out a bit.
I want one of these monsters, at the weights shown, not 3lb plus

I'm gonna dry it out, and also check the ball response as it dries, as I'm interested in the effect this too, that the moisture removal will have.

I've seen bits and bobs over the years, about this subject
I know pro bats are dryer than what a paying punter gets, so I'm interested to know if it improves performance too.

I love this side of batmaking,

Here’s my little one

Measured to rounded edge, spine harder to get exact with the scale I have, but looks around 74/75mm

Was just under 2’15 when I got it but seems to have put on weight since the end of the season so now bang on 2’15. This is with single chevron grip, no scuff.

Moisture meters can give an idea of the levels, but only on the outside of the bat of course. I believe they try to get them to 10%, to find the optimum level where the cleft is light as it can be without breaking up too quickly.

4lb is heavy! But you can get a lot off. I have a couple in the airing cupboard also, my 'Kaboom' is an ounce lighter already since Sunday evening.

Thanks mate, useful.

Speculate for a minute. If GN no longer made Kabooms that are above the new bat regs, but you wanted another Kaboom. Would you want one that was still 2lb 15oz at the reduced sizes, or would you want it lighter because it was smaller?

I've another in the cupboard, that's lost two ounce in two days, so I reckon they were fairly green.

On the moisture reader thing, there's a clip on you tube of S Smith watching his bat made
On it they cut the bottom of the cleft off and see how brittle it is

Yes that's right.  But I guess he's given bats by the dozen so no worries if they only last for a couple of sessions each.

Sorry chaps, I probably should have been clearer from the start! I'm trying to replicate a Kaboom in the workshop. I think I've got reasonably close to the shape but it's currently weighing in at about 3lb.

The thing is, my effort has 38mm edges, spine about 50ish. So considerably smaller than Chad's monster, yet still noticeably heavier.

It really demonstrates how much drier the wood that GN use is, compared to my homemade. I have to get more moisture out, probably another 5-6 ounces.

Dont forget the timber gn uses for these isnt JUST dry, it will also be low density. Hence the mixed bag of grain types you see on these.

Yes that's probably true too. It's interesting to wonder what will happen now. If companies use the same type of light wood in future, but keep within the new regs, the bats will end up at 2lb 4oz or something. Maybe in fact they will need to use wood like mine, so that players can get the 2lb 9 - 2lb 14 oz bats that feel right.

Interesting question.

I got a Warner because they are something special, unusual/rare and it makes me smile every time I look at it. It may actually be to heavy for me to use, havent decided whether to knock it in and give it a go yet. I also have 2 XP80s for the same reason, although these are lighter and have started to use one of them.

Would I buy one of the new reduced size GN Warner’s - probably not. They just aren’t unusual enough to go to the effort and expense of getting it from Aus. Although I could be tempted by one of the other oversize models they are still making.

Would I buy a replica of the warner shape if it was smaller - John did make me a lovely custom last year that was pretty big around 2’11 and very usable. So would certainly be open to buying more like that, but would need to be a usable weight.

I hope theyll still make some light bats to maximum specs using these clefts. Even if they end up being as light as 2-4. I wonder if that will encorouge any new types of bat "technology" that fits the regs. I think it was a slazenger maybe that had hardwood edge inserts that i think were suposed to act as perimeter weighting. Perhaps this will be explored. I lighter cleft, the extra weight taken up along the edges. Might effect the way off centre shots are felt/perform? Who knows. I just hope these big/light clefts dont go to waste.
